Easy with greens - missed a naked pair without greens
9:47 am
tceicher
what's a naked pair?
10:06 am
gman
Several clever answers escape me right not but a naked pair is when you have only two possibilities in a row, box or column. I think in this case it was a pair in the last column. You can eliminate all other possibilities that 'see' or share the pair. Does this make sense?

drwho
Difficulty score 43. Got it without green thanks to Gman's hint I found that naked pair.
10:44 am
drwho
Don't worry tceicher, in the context of Sudoku there is nothing salacious about a naked pair. If you need more explanation than gman gave see:

I don't have anything to do with this website except as a player. However, you can get to yesterday's puzzle in the archives at:

Anyone out there, is this puzzle solveble?

finished ... no guesses ... definitely doable with greens

hurshy
what kind of a question is that? of course it is solvable. there's no such thing as an unsolvable sudoku. they're made to be solved. whether YOU can solve it, of course is an entirely different question...
1:44 pm
Andy
This one is solvable but you must use irrational numbers. The third box in the second row is pi.
1:44 pm
Andy
That said, GO
1:46 pm
drwho
I used transcendental numbers too.
1:47 pm
Andy
Excellent choice. I find that if I pipe the grid through a 3D Mandelbrot Set process, I get pretty pictures. No solutions though.
1:47 pm

Try a Julia set sometime.

Andy
Oohhh... good idea.

I remember writing a Mandelbrot plotting program on a Univac 1100 mainframe back when the Scientific American article came out about the Mandelbrot set.
1:49 pm
Andy
That very same article (I still have my copy) led me to create a program on my Atari 800XL. Took 24 hours per plot.
1:50 pm
drwho
I have a framed plot done with 8 pen plotters hanging on my walls and my parents have 1 too.
1:50 pm
Andy
hehe. Awesome!
1:51 pm
drwho
The mainframe could do the math much quicker than my Atari 1040ST, but the plotter took about 6-8 hours to complete the picture.

I gave that computer away when I left for college and got a MacPlus... wish I still had it.

My Atari is in my basement, but I know the hard drive is dead and probably the rest is too.

I didn't find this one any harder than a usual Medium. I had to go full green, but I didn't have to do any trial & error plugging.

Well, let's see what joy Friday's will bring.
