How can someone do these puzzles in just a matter of a few minutes when it takes others an hour or so? What is the secret??

Practice. Learning some of the advanced techniques so you know what to look for. And some people are just better visually than others. And it varies. There are puzzles folks here find easy that kill me and ones I find trivial that others find hard. I believe it comes down to what you notice/find first. One path leads to easy solving, another to hard.

Pattern recognition, mostly, and that takes experience - for beginners, learning to spot singles in rows columns and boxes we all pretty much understand, but for medium level puzzles you have to learn how to spot what isn't possible - if you can recognize the only possible pairs in a row, column or box then you can eliminate the same numbers in whatever you are studying specifically at the time, the row, the column or the box; after that you'll graduate to spotting the only possible triples and quads. At that point you learn when its best to go back and look for those pairs which had been difficult to see earlier and your speed will grow even faster. Finally you'll get around to learning the more sophisticated strategies, which many times can be an exercise in futility and very time consuming to master. The really good players can work these various strategies out in their head without using pencil marks, and at the expert level that can ultimately save the most time, or cause the most mistakes, lol. When someone says they solved using no greens it means little unless they didn't use guesses. Don't hesitate to use greens until you get some proficiency. It won't take very long until you'll be knocking them down with the best of them..
