Mr. O: the process you describe is what I would call cross hatching the blocks. And I agree that loners (what I call a missing digit scan) are more difficult than either version of cross-hatching. I increment the score 1 point per pass where block cross-hatching is used, 2 points for each pass where row/column cross-hatching is used and 3 points for passes where loners are detected.
