i'm not finding a place i can use the technique today. you can ALMOST use it for the lower left but not quite because you can't tell whether you can put something other than 7,8 in the very bottommost square, or the one right above it.

hurshy, i am not able to find a proper explanation then. in today's puzzle, see the 7+2 pair which appears in E1-E2--I1-I2 (E is column). The I2 must be an 8 then (because all other numbers can be filled with simple elimination). But then what follows is not correct...

i just did the puzzle again from scratch, just in case i had a mistake - but no, i had it all right, and the avoidable rectangle for the pair i mentioned simply ends up with a mismatch later on in the game.
