Ah, I see, the "enter message" button does not work, but 'enter' works fine.

There is no "enter" button. As you found out, you just hit the Enter key. ;)

Page is 'jumpy' though, Dr_God. Every few seconds it's got another 'burp'. I see about the button: the "add chat message" button is not for adding the message to the log, lol.

i don't know what buttons you're talking about, but as long as it's working for you, I guess I'm happy. :)

There is this 'talk-balloon' button right above the chat message box. With mouse-over it says "add chat message". Next to it is a button that says "view entire chat log".

Ahhh. Now I gotcha. The chat balloon button toggles the "enter message" field. Just in case you want to hide it.

Ahhh. That seems to only happen with version 1.0 of Firefox. I recommend upgrading to 1.5. Just click the button at the bottom of this page to get the latest.

It was a funny one :D Nice new addiction, this, I love sudoku and a new one every day is tempting. Especially with the possibility to chat with a gang as nice as this.

I think Dr_G is just trying to make us waste our entire day playing puzzles. I'm appalling bad at Sodoku, but I've never really had time to understand them, so I shall enjoy ones on the easy level for a while!

I think sudoku is a really elegant game. So very few rules and still it never gets boring. You'll figure out the tricks and tactics soon enough, I am sure. It's one of the most logical games I have ever come across.

I think that's the problem - I haven't got the most logical mind in the world!

Haven't seen that yet, but I will. I love the possibilities to mark tiles as "possibly this" or "certainly not that". I only miss a panel that shows which numbers are completed already.

possibly this? that sounds a great idea! I need that - usually I get through sodoku making some utterly intuitive leap somwhere and bumbling through it *giggles* which I'm sure isn't the right way to do things!

You can use the window that pops up from which to select the right number, also with Alt or Shift. Alt gives a nice red little number, to say "certainly not that". And Shift a green one that lets you consider a possibility for a while :)

I'm not entirely sure I like the way the green numbers come up in the positions of the numbers - it feels a bit asymmetrical somehow, but the feature is great!

The advantage of that is, that you can enter more than one possibility in each tile :)

Best way to start is to see what numbers are given the most times and see if that leads to new ones.

In this sudoku it is rather easy to find all the 9s, 7s and 6s. The tougher ones are 1 and 8. The rest is in between.

For instance: given are a 6 in the 2nd and 3rd row. Follows that there must be a 6 in the first row, and that must be on the first or second place of that row, because the 3rd is already occupied. Then you check the first and second column. If there is only one column that has no 6 yet, you'll know where to put that 6 on the first row.

Use the knowledge that a number can also occur only once in every 3x3 grid. That always helps you get another few.

And you could check columns versus rows. If there is an empty spot in a column, you know for sure that every number that appears on the row of that empty spot can NOT be the missing one.

Also, every number already appearing in the same 3x3 grid as the empty spot is excluded. Sometimes that leaves only one option.

Finally done, but had to do it the old fashioned way by printing the grid off and then inputting it.

This is painful. I don't think i;m going to be a regular... : /

It takes a while to get used to Anj, unlike babble you have to be methodical, babble is much more spontanious in the early stages.

and you get a "congratulations you have competed the puzzle" which is nice

Have to say think i'm gonna prefer this to babble. Limited time on line means i can rarely complete a babble puzzle.

Dr God - when I have 2 or 3 nos missing in a line but I can't yet put them in, I note the nos at the end of the row or column. Could this be a facility as I am using pencil and paper at present. I like the figure entry - very easy.

I guess I can figger it out, but I have no idea what to do.

Spellit, I looked at the instructions as I wondered the same kind of thing... I found that if you hold the Shift key down when entering a number, it puts it as a tiny green figure, saying it might be there. A really useful feature!! I just finished the puzzle after entering all the might-be ones that way.

Saving a puzzle is important! I entered a number, then looked at rankings, how to play, etc. When I returned to the puzzle, the number was gone. (Babble doesn't work that way!)

I strongly recommend that you only use the animal tiles when it's an easy puzzle. It's muuuch harder than you'd think.

when you save, does it wipe out your last save? Can there be a "go three steps back" button?

When you save, it overwrites you last save. Just like saving a document on a computer.

They are in different colors. The originals are gray. But it's a really light gray, so if your monitor is really light, you might not be able to tell.

phooey, must say it is a slicker site than many of the other soduku ones I have looked at in the past (ones that have gone graphic mad). Only thing I dont like is the constant log in/outinfo flashing up.

it helps if you print the original grid before you enter any numbers.
then, when you are 100% positive about a number, you can write it on your paper grid.
that way, if you do have to start over, at least you arent starting from the very beginning...

Dr. G, I have a question - how are the rankings going to be calculated? Will a half-completed puzzle be a ding in the rankings like in Babble?

oh, well here's the deal gem, if you get the number grid to pop up and hold down "shift" as you pick a number, it puts a little green number in the box, which means it's a possibility. if you hold down "alt" it puts a red one, which means you're sure it can't be that.

and you can put all nine numbers in a box in red and green at the same time!

This is my first time playing here. I am using Firefox, and the puzzle area flashes in a strange way. Does this happen to everyone else, too?

Hi Krys10 -- I'm over here from Babble exploring. I was doing this type of puzzle years ago when it wasn't called Sudoku. Found out it was a 'craze' when we were in Europe last October -- it was everywhere!

Start with 9's I think - the number that appears more than the other ones.

I can't see the puzzle anymore

look at it as ROWS and COLUMNS

in groups of 3's

so the top 3 rows - there has to be 3 nines only

one on first row, one on second, one on third

then look at it as columns

in the same way

Then look at it as the boxes of 9's

see what I mean?

I'm trying to follow ya.

Pick a number that you have lots off but not all

Look at Columns

Find the Columns that are mising that number

then

using the same principle - look at the rows for the same number

You should get an intersection of where that number can go

See it?

Dr_God -- I think an autosave option might be a good idea -- I just clicked on the Rankings to see how many might have finished yesterday (only to see that they won't start till Apr 1st) and when I came back, my progress, meager though it was, had been wiped out

I agree, Woulf! Also, an auto-clear option? For those times when you're messed up and want to clear the whole board!

It's a double-edged sword. One of the benefits of the the manual "save" feature is that you can revert back to your last save point by refreshing the page.

And you'd lose that with an auto-save feature

But I feel your pain. I've done it once or twice too. ;)

How about an 'undo' feature? Up to the last ten moves?

It's a thought, but I'd like to keep things simple

That's why I said it should be an option -- if the player could turn it on or off themself then they would be have to accept responsibility for their choices ;)

Adding options is always good in theory, but in practice, options can sometimes make things more confusing. It's best to always keeps things as simple as possible.

But that may keeping it simple by going the auto-save route.

This is why I am merely a user and not a designer, so I can make suggestions to experts who can then show me the flaws in my logic

You'll be happy to know that I'm at least leaning towards going the auto-save route. Just not completely convinced yet. ;)

Thanks. I didn't notice. Love Sudoku and some of the other sites I've played have the numbers themselves colored. This works.
