skizzybiz

12:21 am
Edonia

GO

go
12:25 am
skizzybiz

ever the fine bunch of conversationalists
12:25 am
austinuu

if you make us talk, you'll screw up the scientific process
12:26 am
skizzybiz

hehe, it's scientific, is it?
12:26 am
austinuu

that's what the doctor says
12:26 am
skizzybiz

think of the price you pay just by saying "go" and "done"
12:26 am
skizzybiz

it'll catch up with you in your old age, you know
12:27 am
austinuu

It's $14.95 for the pro version, just like anyone else
12:27 am
austinuu

oh, I get it now
12:27 am
austinuu

you're making a potty joke
12:28 am
skizzybiz

wow, you got that from what i said?
12:28 am
austinuu

when you have kids you find yourself saying things you'd never image .... you went poo poo in the potty? really? that's great!
12:29 am
austinuu

I'm so excited!
12:29 am
skizzybiz

i mean, i'm perfectly willing to take credit for it
12:30 am
austinuu

well what are you saying .... that all "I am starting the task" and "I have not completed the task" does not make for an emotionally satisfying experience?
12:31 am
skizzybiz

emotions! i thought we were talking about science
12:31 am
austinuu

emotions! science! it's all process
12:31 am
skizzybiz

alright, well i am all...
12:31 am
skizzybiz

finished? completed?
12:31 am
skizzybiz

i just can't think of the right word here
12:31 am
h

go
12:32 am
skizzybiz

nope, it's not that one
12:32 am
austinuu

I suppose the question is, "people who say nothing but 'go' and 'done'", what are they really trying to communicate?
12:32 am
austinuu

And do they really have souls?
12:33 am
skizzybiz

something tells me they wouldn't pass a turing test
12:34 am
austinuu

I didn't do that well either, I think I got a B-, but barely
12:34 am
skizzybiz

can you imagine a conversation between an iron sudoku player and Eliza?
12:34 am
skizzybiz

"go"
12:34 am
skizzybiz

"is it because of your mother that you say 'go'?"
12:35 am
austinuu

maybe we could just fill the chatterbox with numbers, as if it was a game of go fish
12:35 am
austinuu

give me all of your sevens
12:35 am
austinuu

particularly the seven in the first column, since I am making about no progress here
12:36 am
skizzybiz

funny thing about that, is i have no idea how i progressed through this puzzle
12:37 am
skizzybiz

i think i let some part of my brain solve it that was only very loosely connected to my consciousness
12:37 am
skizzybiz

anyway, no 7s. go fish
12:37 am
skizzybiz

do you have any Bs?
12:38 am
austinuu

there is no seven in the first column? there has to be a seven...it's iron sudoku, not wacky sudoku. No, I don't have any Bs.
12:39 am
skizzybiz

maybe someone over at babble could help with that...
12:39 am
pito75

I have BINGO!
12:39 am
skizzybiz

actually, i do remember one detail. there's a hidden pair that's easy to find and reveals a couple other numbers. really gets the ball rolling
12:40 am
austinuu

i've forgotten my secret babble code, but that's b5/8?
12:40 am
augurus

What do I say when I win Bingo?
12:40 am
skizzybiz

well sure pito, because you got the middle square for free... and about 20 other squares
12:41 am
austinuu

most people say "bingo" but if you want to try something different, I'm cool with that
12:41 am
skizzybiz

augurus was his name-o?
12:41 am
austinuu

like a Fred Flintstonian "yabba yabba doo"
12:55 am
h

done, no greens
12:56 am
raggedyandy3478

same
12:57 am
h

those other folks were having fun... :)
12:57 am
austinuu

pssst. we can still hear you
12:57 am
austinuu

well, not hear you
12:58 am
austinuu

so much as read the letters that you type
12:58 am
h

ok - im discarding a 3 of clubs...
12:58 am
austinuu

dang! still looking for that seven in the first col
12:59 am
skizzybiz

the 7 will be found when its time has come
12:59 am
skizzybiz

have you found the pair in the upper right?
12:59 am
h

and forgotten soon after...
1:00 am
austinuu

i haven't even made it to that quadrant
1:00 am
austinuu

or whatever the equivalent term is for the 1/9th segment
1:00 am
h

skizzy is giving you a hint - look closer?
1:02 am
h

this whole puzzle is about pairs and triplets of knowledge... then whatever digits are left just fall-out...
1:03 am
austinuu

oh look, there's a common multiplier of three in that grid
1:05 am
austinuu

is that different from any of the other iron sudoku puzzles?
1:05 am
h

draws the two-of-spades... rummy...
1:06 am
austinuu

or was that a comment about sudoku in general?
1:06 am
h

uh, what? most of the other ones i end up looking for single digits. this one was looking for blocks-of-digits. i dont know, it "felt" different...
1:06 am
h

ie - specific to this puzzle, for me...
1:08 am
austinuu

I see, like in the Matrix, when Neo starts seeing the social construct of reality as binary code
1:09 am
h

maybe... i think im too tanned to be neo... ;)
1:10 am
h

did the pair-hint for the top-block make sense? or should i leave you alone to work on it quietly...
1:11 am
h

oddly, when yall were bantering - it was kinda nice - i didnt actually read any of it - but the scrolling screen was cool...
1:11 am
h

im SINGing in the rain...
1:12 am
austinuu

oh yes, I have the ... is there a numbering system for these quadrants?
1:12 am
austinuu

or 1/9th tents?
1:12 am
h

i think we call them "blocks"
1:13 am
austinuu

are they numbered block 1, block 2, block 3?
1:13 am
h

nah - top-right, bottom-center...
1:14 am
austinuu

okay, well then yes it was helpful. I have completed the top-right and center-right blocks, and narrowed it down to two choices for the top center and bottom right
1:14 am
h

rows and cols are 1 thru 9 in standard top-bottom left-right matrix format.
1:14 am
austinuu

dang that's a lot of text
1:16 am
h

hmm - thats odd, i dont think i understood you... a block is a 3x3 grid. are you describing individual cells inside a block? egads - youre right - too much text... :)
1:17 am
austinuu

we have rows 1 through 9. we have columns 1 through 9. my question is whether the blocks/grids are also referred to in that way.
1:18 am
austinuu

if I could be a superhero, I'd want to be wikipedia man
1:18 am
austinuu

that way, I'd know the answer to almost everything ... almost
1:19 am
h

wikipedia-man, cool! no - dont think so on numbering the blocks/grids...
1:20 am
h

you said you had the top-right and center-right bocks... did you mean 18 cells were filled in?
1:21 am
h

bwackk... bok bok... :::rooster/hen noises:::
1:21 am
austinuu

yabba yabba doo!
1:21 am
austinuu

for the doctor, that means done.
1:21 am
h

so what DOES the 23 in 23-skidoo mean? tell us mister wikipedia-man... ;)
1:22 am
h

hey - congrats!
1:22 am
austinuu

oh, I was looking up the block/grid question. they're actually called regions
1:23 am
h

i sit - corrected... :)
1:24 am
austinuu

they're also called blocks as well
1:24 am
austinuu

A Sudoku grid has 9 rows, columns and boxes each having 9 cells.
1:25 am
austinuu

The full grid has 81 cells. Cells are commonly called squares, but in technical descriptions the term square is avoided since the boxes and grid are also squares.
1:25 am
austinuu

Boxes are also known as blocks.
1:25 am
austinuu

Three vertically stacked blocks make a stack.
1:25 am
austinuu

Three horizontally connected blocks make a band.
1:25 am
austinuu

A chute is either a band or a stack.
1:26 am
austinuu

A grid has 3 bands, 3 stacks and 6 chutes.
1:26 am
h

shoot...
1:27 am
austinuu

there is no authoritative explanation for the "23" in "23 skiddoo"
1:27 am
austinuu

but rather multiple possible sources
3:24 am
eyeman

whew, did it. Now off to jury duty! Hope I can find a parking space.
4:30 am
spreadeagle

Done. Not many freebies, needed greens.

thanks for the advice
9:30 am
adquilt

Got it! I was just about to give up when all of a sudden I hit a string of completions. With just 2 days on the site, I'm not sure I want to see a difficult puzzle - mediums are quite a challenge.
9:30 am
adquilt

spreadeagle - still haven't completed 5/4/06 puzzle. Think I'll turn it over to my son. Guessing seems to be the only way to complete it, but I keep guessing wrong!!
9:53 am
hurshy

well, i felt that this one was pretty easy, but then, i followed my dad's advice (which, unless your dad is a real screw-up, tends to be a good thing to do)
9:59 am
spellacked

This one's a slow starter: basic scans only turned up a 3, two 7s and an 8.
10:16 am
spellacked

but after only about 1/2 the greens, it all falls into place
10:26 am
UnikeTheHunter

Go.
10:38 am
spreadeagle

adquilt - I'm glad I wasn't the only one that had to guess. Had to guess again for 5/5, and now 5/10 has me stuck. I really try hard to avoid guessing, but the advance strategies I've seen at sites like scanraid.com don't make much sense to me. Yet. I'm going to go back and read it again.
10:49 am
UnikeTheHunter

Man, I hardly got any before I had to put in the greens. And I'm still stuck.
11:06 am
UnikeTheHunter

Things really opening up.
11:12 am

Difficulty score 20. Another exercise in region interesection analysis.

I am going to be more agreeable than my distinguished collegue was yesterday and concur that today's was easy, though a slow at first.
