I must have a different style, because this one actually took me longer than yesterday's.

Difficulty score 12. An exercise in cross hatching.

a snap. One pass of cross hatching (can I force a 9 to be here because of the placement of the other 9s) plus one pass of fill-ins (what's left in this square/row/column?) solved everything

You did. But look out, I've upgraded and I'm doing the archives.

Gman, that last message was for you.

UTH, dahduke wants to know what a "boat" is. I was going to tell him it's a hole in the water that you pour money into.
10:27 am

10:28 am

But I don't know what you meant by "boat" either.
10:30 am
UnikeTheHunter
Somewhere I read about shapes, fish, boat, etc, of corner intersections. For example (2,7) (2,7) (2,7) (2,7) intersecting at four corners... and variations on that of different shapes.

Ahh, probably at scanraid.com.

Bon voyage and good luck to the Colts. I will probably have to cheer for the Bears, though.
10:42 am

no problemo--it's a win-win for me .. It's hard to have hard fealings for either of those teams-- someone said rooting against the Colts was like rooting against Mr. Rodgers!!!!

4:32 pm
martom
Spreadeagle - just got back I'm no further on but don't even know how anyone can help!
7:26 pm
spreadeagle
martom - I solved the march 28 puzzle a few weeks ago and I don't remember the problems I had. Tell me where you are stuck and maybe I can give you a hint.
7:30 pm
spreadeagle
wow, Iwent back and read the "chatterbox" about that puzzle and it caused a lot of discussion. I have no idea if i solved it without guessing or not. I guess I will just have to do it again to find out :)
7:46 pm
Krys10
the march 28th one is the hardest one we've had, IMHO. I remember it was the first one where I had to guess.
7:46 pm
Krys10
and it was particuarly irksome for those of us who found the site shortly before it opened, because there were no archives and the only way to get the points was to finish it in the first 24 hours!
7:47 pm
Krys10
i mean, those of us who were on the site early on.
7:47 pm
spreadeagle
That sounds brutal!
7:47 pm
Krys10
the stress of it made me realize that i spent too much time playing computer games and that i was more competitive than I wanted to believe :)
7:47 pm
artlady
It was especially frustrating when we had to miss a day and couldn't make it up!
7:49 pm
Krys10
yup, back in the day. i have never seen pocketmole in the chat logs before, but i will always remember that he/she was the only one with a "perfect" score before the archives feature opened up.
7:49 pm
Krys10
i became a little obsessed. i'm much better now.
7:50 pm
artlady
I don't have that much free time! I had to give up Babble...sigh. This I can usually find time for, altho I'm working to catch up from the past week.
7:50 pm
Krys10
off to dinner - see y'all! have a nice night
7:50 pm
artlady
still obsessed, here...
7:50 pm
Krys10
i only play babble on the little grids, and then only when i have a free day for it :)
7:55 pm
spreadeagle
Is there a way to go back to the archives and solve a puzzle again after you have already solved it? I don't see a way to "start over".
7:56 pm
artlady
Good question..
7:56 pm

7:58 pm

altho Rex is no McMahon
7:59 pm
helenkeller
it's funny, i didn't see this coming at the start of the season - yeah, they were really, really good, but so many other teams were great this season too - it all boils down to the defense
7:59 pm
spreadeagle
Too bad "The Fridge" isn't still there.
8:00 pm
helenkeller
what are you teaching? art?
8:00 pm

har har eagle...He'll probably be at the game!
8:00 pm

I went to school with him at Clemson. He was huge...
8:01 pm
helenkeller
spreadeagle - are you for the bears?
8:01 pm
spreadeagle
Yes. It's good to see them back.
8:01 pm
artlady
yeah. He's unpredictable. However, it is his first full season AND he's off to the SuperBowl
8:02 pm
helenkeller
lol spread - when i was at loyola, there was some of the basketball team in one of my classes - boy were they TALL !!!
8:04 pm
helenkeller
art - yeah, his first full season, finally, although i think they made a mistake in keeping him - hee seems too touchy, emotionally touchy, i mean, about all the critics - i like the cool calm demeanor of tom brady
8:04 pm
spreadeagle
Do you remember Tree Rollins from Clemson? 7' 2" and went to the pros. When he passed us on the sidewalks it was easy to see where the name came from.
8:05 pm
helenkeller
i do not remember the tree, lol
8:05 pm
helenkeller
gotta get over to babble now - it's a biggie & GO BEARS !!
8:07 pm
artlady
spreadeagle, what's your photo of?
8:07 pm
spreadeagle
The Mayan ruins in Belize.
8:08 pm
artlady
ah...thought Mayan. I was in Belize, but didn't see them. Chichen Itza and Tulum, though.
8:09 pm
spreadeagle
We went for a dive trip and took a day to tour several sites. Amazing what they did so many years ago.
8:10 pm
artlady
Great place to dive, I heard. I snorkeled there 2 years ago. I haven't done any diving. Maybe someday!
8:10 pm
spreadeagle
Just do it!!!
8:11 pm
artlady
I saw Apocalypto...really massacred (not really a pun) the Mayan culture!
8:11 pm
artlady
maybe when I retire!
8:11 pm
spreadeagle
I don't know what Apocalypto is, a movie?
8:12 pm
artlady
That's only a few years away...
8:12 pm
artlady
yes, a horrendous mel gibson (the lack of capital letters IS deliberate there) thing
8:14 pm
spreadeagle
I "retired" when I was 35 and became my own boss in rental realestate. Now I work longer hours and rarely get paid. Someday the "sweat equity" should pay off if I ever sell any of the property.
8:17 pm
artlady
there are benefits to a regular paycheck...31 years of teaching here--still going strong!
8:20 pm
spreadeagle
Good for you. I taught some math for a while to grad students after I got my engineering degree. I found it to rewarding and frustrating at the same time. The ones that really wanted to learn what you were teaching were wonderful. The rest, oh well......
8:20 pm
artlady
how true.
8:21 pm
artlady
I've been teaching elementary art forever, just started teaching at the college level one night a week. They all WANT to be there, which is great!
8:22 pm
moe
I am a computer science undergrad at a top 5 school. Here's hoping the job market stays strong!
8:23 pm
spreadeagle
The head of the local community college keeps asking me to teach a few courses. Maybe someday.
8:23 pm
spreadeagle
moe- With the Dems in charge????
8:24 pm
artlady
Good luck moe! I'm trying to make sure my students get jobs, too. Of course, art education is a tough field in these days of test test test.
8:24 pm
moe
Yeah, people want stats and rankings. Thats tough with art ed.
8:26 pm
moe
Well, I've been raised conservative. I've always agreed with the republican mindset and reasoning, I'm just not a fan of republican policy.
8:26 pm
moe
This next election will be interesting, that's for sure.
8:27 pm
artlady
Ah, and I am from a long line of liberals and educators on both sides. Also not a fan of republican policy... ;-)
8:28 pm
spreadeagle
I agree with you about some of their policies. I just can't stand the tax, tax, tax of the dems. However, the reps haven't been much better since it takes so much pork to get elected or re-elected.
8:29 pm
dorens
Spread Eagle... you went to Tulum? I'm going there in two weeks
8:29 pm
moe
No one likes taxes, thats a given.
8:30 pm
moe
Everyone keeps talking about Obama. Personally, I want to see him in debates before I make up my mind.
8:32 pm
spreadeagle
I don't remember Tulum. The picture is of Xunantunich on the guatemala border.
8:33 pm
dorens
oh. it was artlady, I misread the chat.
8:33 pm
artlady
Tulum is beautiful. It sits on a cliff right over the water. Some beautiful carving and murals. It's also quite compact so you can explore it more easily than Chichen Itza. I have some great photos!
8:34 pm
spreadeagle
I just looked it up on-line and it is not one of the site I toured.
8:36 pm
dorens
I have seen lots.... took out every book in the library about it, looking forward to it.... but the place seems kind of rustic --I think I'll like that, but it's been ages since I had to share a room with little lzards and crabs (years ago in the Out Islands) and I'm not sure how it will be.. I'm getting old, spoiled and crochety.
8:36 pm
artlady
Ah, you're spending some time there? Quite rustic....until the cruise ship tours arrive! That's how I saw it--with a group tour.
8:37 pm
dorens
My daughter did a bit of research and came up with it... I think it looks nice and relaxing. But I will have to spend 5 days with no babble (i'm a hopeless addict)... no internet!
8:38 pm
spreadeagle
The older we get the narrower our "comfort zone" becomes.
8:38 pm
artlady
ooohhh...that's tough. I had to give up Babble after years of addiction. Sigh. Just not enough TIME!!
8:38 pm
spreadeagle
Take plenty of bug spray and sun screen.
8:38 pm
dorens
I didn't realize the cruise ships went to Tulum. well, it will make it interesting. Yes, spreadeagle... getting old and like my creature comforts and fortunately can afford them
8:39 pm
dorens
yes, will do. i'm a redhead, so sunscreen is a must..
8:39 pm
dorens
babble seems to be my life these days......i'm sure i'll let go of it one of these days......but it keeps me from getting things done that need doing (like today... 257 words or something like that)
8:40 pm
artlady
The cruise ships go to Cozumel--huge stop in the Caribbean. Tours from them head over to Tulum.
8:40 pm
artlady
Oh I miss it!
8:40 pm
artlady
Dr. God is one of my former students. I'm so proud of him!! (as if I had anything to do with it!)
8:40 pm
dorens
well... i finished today's puzzle. and i'm muy muy cansado (??? never studied espanol)------that makes sense... coming from cozumel. well, we'll just have to try to avoid them.
8:40 pm
dorens
my goodness.... what did you teach him? he is truly a talented man
8:41 pm
spreadeagle
It's good to do without sometimes so we can appreciate what we have. It has always amazed me how happy the locals seem to be and they have almost nothing.
8:41 pm
dorens
that is so true spreadeagle......and I do appreciate the siimple things.... even though I like the finer things as well
8:42 pm
dorens
artlady.... makes sense, doesn't it?........welll. hope to see you in babbleland someday artlady...you can stop in and play a grid now and then without relapsing, can't you? I need to get to bed. good night
8:44 pm
spreadeagle
Watch out for the Belizian rum called "One Barrel". It's nickname "Mugging in a Bottle" is well deserved.
8:44 pm
artlady
Oh yeah! We bought some!
8:45 pm
spreadeagle
I liked the slight cinnamon flavor.
8:46 pm
moe
well, i think its about time that i stop doing archives and start studying for my exam which is in 12 hours.
8:47 pm
moe
night everyone
8:47 pm
spreadeagle
Too bad it is nearly impossible to buy in the US. I was able to get a case from a seller in California, but they stopped shipping anything but wine out of state.
8:47 pm
artlady
ciao, moe
8:47 pm
artlady
I guess that's part of the appeal...you really have to work to get it...or fly to Belize!
8:49 pm
spreadeagle
With the current restrictions I don't know if the airlines allow you to bring any back.
8:50 pm
artlady
true. I forgot. We were just in the eastern caribbean and couldn't bring anything back.
8:51 pm
spreadeagle
Bummer. The duty free shops were always a highlight of our trips.
8:52 pm
artlady
I had some great samples in St. Thomas, though. All we can bring back is memories now. Those are pretty good, though, and healthier!
8:54 pm
spreadeagle
St. Thomas was not one of my favorites: too crowded. We had to pass through there to get to Caneel Bay. Now that is pure luxury!!!
8:56 pm
artlady
Whew! I'm finally caught up. Ok, back to work. Haven't been to Caneel Bay and that was our first trip to St. Thomas. Crowded, yes. Warmer than Chicago, though! Good luck and good night!
10:20 pm
Andy
pretty easy tonight, no greens needed
