All methods that lead to a solved sudoku are okay, but I like to reason them out. What Dave just said is not guessing, I think, but reasoning... and if you make a mistake, you have to pay later :)

it's not pure in the basic sense, but it's one acceptable method of logic, it's like in a mathematical proof where you say "assume that x=1", then follow to the conclusion

i see what you are saying... i guess i felt it should be doable in your head... the other day was the first time i ever had to do that... make a guess and follow the chain of logic using markers... but im new to these so...

if you pick a good square to guess on, then the chain will usually fail in 3-4 hops... easily doable in your head, but most times it's hard to pick out that particular square

I think the pairs method is essentially the N numbers in N boxes method... it works with triples and quads too

If there are N boxes in a row, column, or block, and the boxes contain no more than N of the same values, you can exclude all those values from the remaining boxes in that row, column, or block

It covers the pairs and x-wing though I'm still trying to get the hang of it

For example: if there are three boxes and they contain possibly (3,8,7), (3,7), and (7,8) and no other possible numbers, that means you can exclude those three numbers (3, 7, and 8) from all other boxes in that row, column, or block

Since this was my first puzzle ever, and I just completed it, my Cream of the Crop number should be 501, right?

I'm not sure if I just made a logical leap or not..

Whether you call it guessing or not, there's a long logic chain you need to resolve at one point here; color coding would probably do it too, but if you try one alternative and then the other, you'll see only one of them works.

You know, I think I am going to print out what I have saved and then work on it on paper for a bit. That sometimes helps on a tough puzzle.

Helps me, anyhow. I'll take a break offline and check back in a while (since I have to put littlest one to bed, anyhow!) I'll look for 7s, 5s, and 6s first, thanks. I haven't done an expert puzzle yet, though...

how do you print it? i tried copying but the numbers didnt show up.

Actually, I use the firefox webbrowser, and when I click "file" and "print" all i get is the puzzle--it's very nice not to have the extras.

Scribble, yes, the Redwall series are so great. Do you know the newer series--Deltora dragons? They're for younger than you are, I bet, but it is so neat to see new series coming out there. I like Terry Pratchet, the british author, he is sooo fantasy/make fun of the world...

the chat thing is really distracting to me too, but even when i pay attention to the puzzle i cant do it anyways. :(

i finished by guessing on three different spots, and i feel no shame in admitting it! :-)

GN david and all. I'm going to leave with the note that I didn't make a guess..but I struggled! I found the 3 in the top right, middle middle, then lower right squares. Followed by the middle and right sqaures in the lower row. then I went for 9s in the middle right, 1 in the middle right, then 5s...I hope that helps someone out there. Until tomorrow...
