I really wonder how these can be done with no greens.... any hints?
12:14 pm
Wolfrick

I can't really concieve of how to do any but the most elemental Sudoku without notes/greens.
12:14 pm
Wolfrick

When I first learned on paper, we used a dot code.
12:19 pm
brittlefish.com

mamabear - cross-hatching got some filled in today, then mixing in some row/col/3x3 completion scans was all that was needed
12:22 pm
Wolfrick

What is "cross-hatching"?
12:24 pm
brittlefish.com

okay, i start in upper left 3x3 looking for places for 1s, then to the center top 3x3 looking for 1s then upper right, then center left 3x3 etc.
12:25 pm
brittlefish.com

then i repeat the process looking for 2s
12:25 pm

and so on
12:25 pm
Wolfrick

Ah, I see. I "know" how I solve Sudoku, but don't know any terminology to describe it to anyone else.
12:26 pm
brittlefish.com

there ya go
12:27 pm
brittlefish.com

i do cross-hatching as i scan until nothing looks obvious. then i move on to row/col/3x3 completion and then move back to cross-hatching until it's done. or until something more involved is needed.
12:29 pm
brittlefish.com

this one definitely required only Easy skills, but was pretty slow. well, there were one or two spots where i had to think something through.
12:46 pm
spreadeagle

To solve without greens I use crosshatching like britlefish. I check all 9 blocks for 1's, then 2's, and so on. I also look at empty cells to see if it possible to figure out what belongs there by seeing what number is missing from the corresponding row, column, and block. Then I repeat crosshatcing. It sometimes helps to look at an individual row, column or block and see if I can figure out what numbers are possible, or not, in the cells.
12:53 pm
Wolfrick

So, basically the same thing as filling in the greens, just not writing it down.
12:54 pm
Wolfrick

I'm assuming I know what y'all mean when you say "greens"... you do mean using the shift-key to allow multiple possibities to be noted on the puzzle squares, right?
12:54 pm
spreadeagle

Yes
12:56 pm
spreadeagle

I use this technique on all puzzles, even the "hard' and "expert", to solve as many cells as possible so that I can minimize the greens I have to enter.
1:11 pm
spreadeagle

Another thing to look for is blocks with all three cells in a row or column filled in. This often helps to determine what numbers can not go in cells in an adjacent block.

I wonder if Sudoku is being used to teach logic to students.
1:32 pm
spreadeagle

I bet it is in japan where it originated. It should be here. My 6th grade teacher started me on crosswords to help learn vocabulary words. I still do crosswords every day.

We've got a tablet of Kid's Sudoku, and I keep trying to get my just-turned-five-year-old interested, but they're just a leetle bit beyond her right now.

wolfrick. precisely 4309 licks. I did it when I was in the 4th grade. Only a 4th grader could have the combination of detrmination of will and yet not be bored to death by the task.
