Hooray! Was nice to have an expert puzzle again. Need to do yesterday's now..
12:18 am
Marzipan
Hope you all have a good weekend. Good night, everyone.

Not too bad... did a guess but it was the right guess :) now, sleep.

Congrats. I need sleep, too.

Oh my gosh 5 whole points. I did an expert! woo hoo~

UnikeTheHunter
Did you draw your own icon?
9:17 am
artlady
Yes. I have a few with different expressions. Used to change them depending on my mood in Babble.
9:17 am
ypsigirl
off to babble and then to do the dreaded taxes :)

I don't have time now.

you all know me as a babble expert, right? Well I have spent more time with this sudoki puzzle than with babble this morning, and still cant get it. Going for my third attempt.
10:25 am
UnikeTheHunter
Okay, I'll have to make a guess.
10:26 am
Inge
IF I do eventually get this one, I will never try sudoku again, much too frustrating. Babble is calming
10:27 am
dalebo
help on this one!!!
10:29 am
UnikeTheHunter
Done it. Really only crosshatching until I had to make a guess. And with the benefit of having botched a tripple earlier, I guessed the right one of two.

10:43 am

I haven't done anything really tricky yet and all I have left to figure out is 4's, 5's, 7's, and 9's.

I've ended up with the same numbers and I can't figure out which way to go next.
10:51 am
Krys10
with an expert level puzzle, it's almost always the case that you have to do a forcing chain (an elaborate game of "what-if" or guessing) to finish. that's what I did here and it's working fine.
10:51 am
Krys10
I'm off - have a nice weekend, everyone!

There's a y-wing towards the middle.

11:50 am
OrangeSlice
Today's isn't _that_ bad
11:51 am
miller da killer
i think i just have to figure out some of those expert logic techniques...because on most experts that i solve i usually guess
11:51 am
OrangeSlice
hehe. well, today's uses an easy technique.
11:52 am
miller da killer
good. i'm glad to hear it...i've almost solved all of the puzzles starting in january and i'm moving backwards. i'm really excited to see so much dark grey in my archives!!! :)

11:56 am
hurshy
nice day here
11:56 am
miller da killer
it was raining...and then the snow started...i was supposed to run at a track meet today (haha) the track is covered in snow and water
11:58 am
miller da killer
and just two days ago it was worm and springy outside
11:58 am
miller da killer
*warm
11:58 am
hurshy
the worms do like to come out in the spring though
11:59 am
miller da killer
yes...though i didn't see any :)
11:59 am
OrangeSlice
Seattle tends to 'fade in' to spring by warming up a little and then raining for a couple weeks.
12:00 pm
hurshy
seattle seems very romantic to me
12:00 pm
OrangeSlice
Which is still preferable to the snow and ice.
12:00 pm
hurshy
i guess bc of sleepless in seattle
12:00 pm
miller da killer
colorado weather just changes every day: from rain to sun to snow to wind
12:01 pm
miller da killer
never seen that movie
12:02 pm
hurshy
heavens to betsy, whyever not?
12:02 pm
OrangeSlice
Neither have I, actually, and I live here.
12:02 pm
hurshy
yes but you're a boy
12:02 pm
miller da killer
i don't know why...too many zorro movies i guess.
12:03 pm
hurshy
how many zorro movies are there?
12:03 pm
OrangeSlice
Yes but I'm usually of the opinion that Seattle is underdog to N.Y. and L.A. and those other places, and so I generally enjoy things that involve my city.
12:03 pm
miller da killer
i think two...but i could watch them daily!!! i LOVE antonio banderas
12:03 pm
hurshy
well watch it then. it's a lovely movie. meg ryan's hair is so pretty in it.
12:04 pm
miller da killer
i don't care too much for meg ryan personally.
12:04 pm
hurshy
miller - i think there are old ones too...
12:04 pm
miller da killer
but she does have cool haircuts
12:04 pm
OrangeSlice
I think we just don't have as much exciting crime.
12:04 pm
hurshy
that is good!
12:04 pm
miller da killer
yes...but not with antonio banderas
12:04 pm
OrangeSlice
Maybe someone should make a movie about the iPod muggings. lol
12:04 pm
hurshy
i think i see the problem here
12:05 pm
hurshy
it is 4, 5, 7, and 9
12:05 pm
OrangeSlice
Do you want the solution, or would you prefer to hunt it down on your own?
12:05 pm
hurshy
and i think this chicken salad has gone bad :(
12:06 pm
hurshy
oh i can do it fine, don't worry bout me
12:06 pm
miller da killer
sorry about the chicken salad.
12:06 pm
OrangeSlice
Righto then.
12:08 pm
hurshy
what i wouldn't give for a wheelbarrow...
12:08 pm
miller da killer
?
12:08 pm
miller da killer
why do you need one?
12:08 pm
hurshy
did i say wheelbarrow? i meant unique rectangle.
12:08 pm
hurshy
force of habit i guess
12:09 pm
hurshy
oh no it's wrong anyway
12:10 pm
OrangeSlice
There was one that turned up, but it was after the chain was broken and as such didn't last too long.
12:11 pm
hurshy
well, so i have to force it, you're saying? i keep hoping for an expert where i needn't
12:11 pm
OrangeSlice
No no
12:11 pm
OrangeSlice
Forcing chains is illegal.
12:12 pm
hurshy
well i thought so too but then people said not
12:13 pm
hurshy
and i tried to read about xy chains but it was not making sense
12:13 pm
miller da killer
see you guys later!!!
12:13 pm
OrangeSlice
oh, those are easy
12:13 pm
OrangeSlice
basically, no matter what the middle cell ends up as, one of the branching cells has to be a certain number, thus you can remove that candidate from any cells both branching cells can see.
12:14 pm
OrangeSlice
see you miller
12:14 pm
hurshy
um... is there an example in this grid?
12:14 pm
hurshy
i need examples.
12:14 pm
OrangeSlice
In the case of today's we have an xy-wing of 4, 5 and 9 contained in the top-center and center boxes.
12:15 pm
hurshy
ok, so which is "the middle cell"?
12:16 pm
OrangeSlice
If it's 4, one of the other's is 5. If it's 9, the other other is 5. So you can remove 5 from any cells both branches of the wing can see.
12:17 pm
hurshy
and... which cell can both branches see? i don't see any.
12:17 pm
OrangeSlice
top-center box with candidates 4 5 7
12:18 pm
hurshy
how can the lower branch see that?
12:18 pm
OrangeSlice
It's directly adjacent to it.
12:18 pm
hurshy
ohhhhh wait
12:18 pm
hurshy
i think i get it
12:19 pm
hurshy
i was thinking of the branches as other things... hang on... making sure i see it
12:19 pm
moedog
i didn't have to guess the second time through - must've solved in a different order
12:19 pm
OrangeSlice
Once that 5 is gone, there's a naked pair in that row, which solves for a number further on the right, which breaks the chain.
12:20 pm
hurshy
of course, i see that, but i still haven't completely wrapped my mind around the branches.
12:20 pm
OrangeSlice
It's essentially a naked triple that's not in the same row, column or box.
12:21 pm
hurshy
so... one "branch" is the sixth column, with its three unfilled cells?
12:21 pm
hurshy
and the other is... the center box?
12:21 pm
OrangeSlice
All three cells must have exactly two candidates, and the 'root' middle cell must be able to see both of them.
12:22 pm
OrangeSlice
Two cells are in the center, one is in the top-center
12:23 pm
hurshy
hmm, then i still don't quite get it
12:23 pm
hurshy
it's fourth row, fifth col
12:23 pm
hurshy
5, 6, and
12:23 pm
OrangeSlice
Your middle cell is R5C6, and the wings/branches are R4C5 + R2C6
12:24 pm
hurshy
yay, i see it now
12:24 pm
OrangeSlice
starting with 4/9 as our middle, a few cells directly above it is a 4/5, and in the same box as the middle cell is a 5/9, up and to the left.
12:25 pm
hurshy
thank you so much, that is extremely helpful, not just for this grid, i have been wanting to understand this for so long and nobody was around to explain it.
12:25 pm
OrangeSlice
No problem. It's a very useful technique :)
12:26 pm
hurshy
i knew it would be, but i just couldn't understand it reading through the explanations on websites.
12:26 pm
hurshy
i THOUGHT people were wrong about forcing chains but then nobody could show me about this... i feel MUCH better now.
12:27 pm
hurshy
you are my new hero
12:27 pm
hurshy
it's superhero icon day on babble. if you send me a picture of you i will put it up. :)
12:27 pm
OrangeSlice
I usually find it easier to learn a new technique when I have a real puzzle in front of me that has one in it.
12:27 pm
hurshy
yes, meeeeeee too.
12:28 pm
OrangeSlice
I don't think I have any digital photos of me on here :)
12:28 pm
hurshy
well, i will use a can of orange slice then.
12:28 pm
hurshy
you'll be replacing Common Multiple Man - so this is a VERY high compliment.
12:29 pm
hurshy
(or would you prefer a slice of an actual orange?)
12:29 pm
OrangeSlice
I named myself after the soda, actually.
12:29 pm
hurshy
ok then, soda it is
12:29 pm
OrangeSlice
A childhood addiction, and the cause of much dental work in adult life.
12:30 pm
hurshy
can or bottle?
12:31 pm
OrangeSlice
Either or.
12:31 pm
OrangeSlice
I'm not picky.
12:32 pm
hurshy
i'm going with can
12:33 pm
OrangeSlice
hmm, I should use a can of orange slice as my avatar
12:36 pm
hurshy
you can google (images) orange slice soda
12:37 pm
OrangeSlice
Yep, there we go.
12:38 pm
OrangeSlice
Alas, profile page seems to have blown it up
12:41 pm
hurshy
yeah i don't think doc updated this site to show things non-square in the profile page like he did with babble.
12:44 pm
OrangeSlice
oh well.
12:47 pm
OrangeSlice
Nothing a quick run through the image editor can't fix.
12:50 pm
hurshy
that's better
2:53 pm
augurus
This sudoku barely acquired the expert rating.
3:04 pm
OrangeSlice
(x)y-wings are widely considered expert techniques for some reason.
3:11 pm
OrangeSlice
I suppose finding them is the hard part usually.
3:36 pm
Andy
X-wings are easy to find. Y wings are not so easy, I find.
3:40 pm
Linda
very easy for an expert!
3:42 pm
Andy
I haven't taken the time to learn the patterns.
3:49 pm
Andy
OK. I just took the time. We'll see if it comes in handy on this archival puzzle I'm doing :)
4:24 pm
OrangeSlice
Whoo, finally solved Oct. 1
4:25 pm
OrangeSlice
What an awful puzzle.
4:45 pm
brianarn
So is the X-wing the key to today? I'm down to 26 or so and lesser techniques seem to not be cutting it
4:45 pm
OrangeSlice
XY-wing.
4:46 pm
brianarn
I don't know either technique, so I guess it's time to learn. :D
4:48 pm
OrangeSlice
I explained it to someone else in the chat log a little while ago
4:50 pm
brianarn
It's just barely there at the bottom - combined with brainbashers, I think this may have unlocked it. Yay! Let's see
4:51 pm
brianarn
Seems like an interesting technique, although I feel weird trusting it. :D
4:52 pm
OrangeSlice
It's perfectly logical.
4:52 pm
brianarn
I suppose it is, I'm just not seeing it immediately yet
4:52 pm
OrangeSlice
For either candidate of the root cell, one of the wing cells must be <number>, therefore any instances of said number can be removed from any cells that both wings can see.
4:54 pm
brianarn
That opened up the rest of the puzzle rather quickly, I must say.
4:55 pm
brianarn
I gotta be off for the day - but thanks for the tip! Too awesome. bye. :)

sudoko and cough medicine with codine do NOT mix - just an fyi
6:24 pm
Andy
(March 25 2006, that is)

codine tends to not mix with anything.
