I've been going back through the archives, and it seems to me that if there's a number that doesn't appear on the start of the puzzle, it''s going to be an 8 more often than any other number. I wonder if there's an easy way to verify that.

spellacked - good observation - this could be an example of benford's law. It could also be due to the randomizing algorithm the program uses. A vbscript or javascript could go through the archives and get all the starting numbers, then count occurences to see the ranking of appearance.
