For our non-US friends here: Please always keep in mind that Trump lost the popular vote. On behalf of sane US citizens, we're so sorry for the Electoral College.

It works the way it was intended to work.

8201girl, The Electoral College is now constrained by rules that lock the electors in. This is different than what was intended as described by Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Paper #68, a letter to the State of New York.

No greens, one guess. Other than that, easy. 28.

Diane, being sorry for the electoral college accomplishes nothing. We need to push for its abolition. The argument for abolition is a simple one: in a country that claims to be the ultimate democracy, our president is not elected by the people, which makes a mockery of our claim to be a democracy. We can't have it both ways, and I know which way I prefer.

For our US and non-US friends and enemies. The Electoral College is the US Constitution, Article 2, Section 1 and also in the 12th Amendment. I, for one, do not and never will apologize for that article or anything in the Constitution. America need not apologize for its form of government to any country and likewise, there is no expectation that another country needs to apologize for their government.

Who claims we are a democracy? We are a representative republic.

TallMike
Hillary for one. She refers to our democracy over and over and over. But that's not the point. Most US citizens believe they live in a democracy and want to live in one.

When it suits us, our leaders proclaim that we are the leading promoter of democracy around the world. We must stop being so obviously hypocritical. We can't have it both ways.

Agreed. It drives me insane. We have never been a democracy. Even at the local level most cities and states are representative governments. The closest thing we have to democracy are voter referenda and propositions.
