I used it immediately - it showed no naked singles at the beginning - and a lot of the pattern needed to solve were doubles, triples, quads which are pretty hard to spot generally. Found very few locked candidates, if any, as I solved.

this one is difficult because it doesn't give you a lot right off the bat, but you just have to fill in the possibilities and work backwards... it is easy in the sense you don't have to use Y-wing or swordfish, etc., but seems more difficult because it takes a bit longer

I thought this one was easy, but tedious. You couldn't get many numbers by simple cross-hatching, but once you filled in all the options, you could get it all by process of elimination. No advanced techniques necessary.

Ugh! Finished. I think this one was more of a medium. Not really advanced techniques so much as a lot of staring and hunting.

i try to get as many numbers without the greens first, then try to see where greens can only go in two or three places in a box or col/row. If you start going mad with the greens they can bog you down.

I skimmed a book about writing sudoku puzzle generators

i was workin on it earlier and not getting anywhere. . .but i just came back here, and was done in ten minutes

The ratings are a rough gustimate of how hard the puzzle will be.

The program in the book used a hand full of techniques rated from simplest up to brute force. If it could solve it with only the simplest technique and the # of blanks fell within a certain range, it was marked "easy"

It looked like a good system. I imagine a more in depth analysis of the puzzle could give more accurate ratings

i'd say it's a pretty accurate scale right now...after all,those easy puzzles that seem hard...just make you feel really smart when a "medium" seems easy!! lol

some of the hards here should also rate medium

the hards here rarely need x-wing or swordfish - some of the experts here had so many forcing chains, it was effectively brute-force

but it really doesn't matter in the end, because anyone can solve them all

It's funny. 3 days ago I ranked tied for 96th on "Elders". Now I'm down to 107th. I've solved each of the last 20+ puzzles

I suspect if you pay the $15, you get a rankings boost as well.

all the new paying member can now pass up the non-paying members by doing the past puzzles which are not open to free accounts
