Still working on Saturday's puzzle.
4:10 am
UnikeTheHunter
Did Saturday's. Needed a guess.
7:46 am
peternl
yesterday's was very hard
7:46 am
peternl
still failing, going on to the day befores...
7:46 am
smooth_pappa
yeah, it started off easy yesterday... then just hit a wall
7:51 am
smooth_pappa
and done with todays
7:55 am
peternl
ok, two days ago done. hmm, try yesterdays again
7:57 am
smooth_pappa

8:34 am
spreadeagle
Done. No greens. Good puzzle.

gman
spreadeagle==did you get yesterday's puzzle yet?? If not, you better get a big cup of coffee. It'll take awhile.
8:41 am
spreadeagle
I had to guess to solve it.
8:41 am
gman
ditto--more than once, too.
8:41 am
spreadeagle
Nothing I tried helped at all.
8:44 am
spreadeagle
Somebody said something about using "jellyfish", a 4 x 4 version of "swordfish", but I couldn't make it work.
8:45 am
yul
don't you like forcing chains too, s.e.?
8:45 am
spreadeagle
Just another name for guessing...
8:46 am
gman
I might look at the puzzle again. It was uniquely hard. I have a hard time seeing swordfish, much less 4x4..
8:47 am
spreadeagle
Me too. There has to be a way.
8:47 am
yul
and the other techniques are not? :)
8:48 am
gman
I seem to reall using an x wing to eliminate one or 2 2's but it didn't open much up.
8:50 am
gman
yul--guessing (or forcing) is a 'last resort' when other logical techniques are exhausted.
8:52 am
yul
not at all. all techniques are equally 'guessing' only in forcing chain there is no define pattern
8:53 am
yul
not like in an x/y wing or fish
8:53 am
spreadeagle
yul--Are you one of those people that don't believe man has actually been to the moon?
8:56 am
yul
I really don't see a problem with eliminating numbers by starting at a 'random' place :)
8:58 am
spreadeagle
That's fine. After all, it's just a puzzle played for fun. I like to understand the logic of the solution. If there is any.
9:02 am
yul
you could have a really nice and short forcing chains some times which could help solve expert puzzles without filling out greens or much effort at all. I don't like to struggle :)

RE: yesterday's RXPERTexpert; as I suspected, there are 16 fewer Elites in the rankings than the day before
9:03 am
gman
sorry, finger fumble!!
9:05 am
spreadeagle
That's interesting. I'm trying to catch up after being gone for 10 days and the May 3rd medium is giving me a fit.
9:14 am
Minski
Grrrrr! I did something wrong from the beginning and I had to start over. This is a rather difficult easy.
9:19 am
yul
my point is that the yesterday's expert was very easy to solve with an eight step forcing chain between 6/8.
9:22 am
Krys10
i've gone back to using greens for easys. Decided life is too short, at least until the end of the semester!
9:25 am
Minski
I almost always use greenies except for the easiest of the easies. I like to devote most of my time to Babbling.
9:45 am
Minski
Finally Done! That was a lot of work for an easy.
11:19 am
ShadeEagle
done. it wasn't terrible; didn't have to use greens but had to keep track of a fair amount of stuff instead. still, way easier than the hellish one from yesterday
11:35 am
bunnyvicious
done
11:51 am
chebuctonian
starting yesterday's expert
12:13 pm
spellacked
much easier than yesterday. greenfree.

Todays puzzle scores 23. Of the 312 Iron Sudoku puzzles I have evaluated so far, the average score is 25. The average easy puzzle is a little over 18.
2:07 pm
hokie carla
what was yesterday's? working on that right now.
2:12 pm
spreadeagle
Hi Hokie, he gave it a 41. If you solve it without guessing, let us know how you do it.
2:13 pm
hokie carla
haha - I've already resorted to guessing. but I don't like to call it guessing, just trial & error. :-)
2:16 pm
drwho
Yesterday's was only 41 compared to the average of 52.26 for the 23 expert puzzles that I have evaluated so far.
2:18 pm
hokie carla
Interesting. With the exception of one nasty one early on, most of the experts have been manageable & this one is turning into a PITA. Maybe I made a mistake marking the greens, or maybe I should go eat lunch.
2:20 pm
drwho
The experts that I have evaluated have 2 tied for the top score of 94. There really aren't enough data point to see any clustering of the scores around the average. The lowest score for an expert is 29 so far.
2:23 pm
hokie carla
oh, well. going to eat lunch now.
2:26 pm
Moozey
hokie I'm struggling on yesterdays too
5:08 pm
hokie carla
well, I got it, but I never would have w/out a checkpoint.
6:15 pm

done!!!!!!!!!!
9:18 pm
LeslieAnn
did any of the smart folks ever figure out what number the jellyfish from yesterday involved?
9:48 pm
LeslieAnn
bahhh i don't get this jellyfish business
