boy, that was a breeze: one pass of crosshatching and elimination of what's left solved it.

Hello - here for the first time - what are greens?
8:46 am
Ecofreak
Greens are the numbers that can be in the square. Hold down the Shift key and type the numbers that can be in the square and you will have a guide to fill in the puzzle. To eliminate a graan number once ot is no longer a possibility, hold Shift and type the number.

Foffle: you know how when you are entering multiple possible values into a square? All of those little numbers are green. It can take a while to fill in all of them in an entire puzzle, so someone wrote a JavaScript that will do that for you.
8:47 am
Foffle
oh great to know that thanks :)

If you cut the following JavaScript (from the word "javascript" on) and paste it into your browser's address bar (then hit enter) it will fill in all the valid greens for you: javascript:for%20(i=1;%20i<=9;%20i++)%20{for%
20(j=1;%20j<=9;%20j++)%20{if%20(grid[i][j].va
lue%20==%20'')%20{ClearTinySquares(i,j);}}}
for%20(i=1;%20i<=9;%20i++)%20{for%20(j=1;%20j
<=9;%20j++)%20{if%20(grid[i][j].value%20!=%20
'')%20{var%20tmp_value%20=%20grid[i][j].val
ue;for%20(k=1;%20k<=9;%20k++)%20{for%20(l=1;%
20l<=9;%20l++)%20{if%20(grid[k][l].value%20==
%20'')%20{if%20((Math.ceil(i/3)%20==%20Math
.ceil(k/3)%20&&%20Math.ceil(j/3)%20==%20Math.
ceil(l/3))%20||%20i%20==%20k%20||%20j%20==%20
l)%20{grid[k][l]['mini'][tmp_value]%20=%20-
1;}}}}}}}for%20(i=1;%20i<=9;%20i++)%20{%20for
%20(j=1;%20j<=9;%20j++)%20{%20if%20(grid[i][j
].value%20==%20'')%20{%20for%20(k=1;%20k<=9
;%20k++)%20{%20if%20(grid[i][j]['mini'][k]%
20!=%20-1)%20grid[i][j]['mini'][k]%20=%201;
%20}}}}for%20(i=1;%20i<=9;%20i++)%20{for%20(j
=1;%20j<=9;%20j++)%20{if%20(grid[i][j].value%
20==%20'')%20{for%20(k=1;%20k<=9;%20k++)%20

having problems here Jim - it won't block for cut or copy
9:01 am
Jim
Hmmm ... As long as you can see it all on the screen without having to scroll, you should be able to select the entire script and copy ... Try creating a new bookmark in your browser, editing the bookmark, and pasting into the address field of the bookmark. It should work.

I don't recommend telling "first timers" about the auto fill. Let them suffer for a while like most of us did :)
9:39 am
Andy
And we don't need another flame war about whether using auto-fill is cheating or not :)
9:42 am
Andy
(he said as he used auto-fill on this archive medium...)

ypsigirl
done! Easy! :)
12:47 pm
skizzybiz
also, autofill generally ends up making the grid much more crowded than it needs to be

sometimes you feel like you're in one of those movies where the whole audience is going "don't do it! don't do it! get out of there!" because they can hear the scary music and you can't.
4:56 pm
hurshy
no? just me? ah well.
