Scott Pappalardo didn't do what many of you think he did. He shortened the barrel of his AR-15 (which is illegal just like sawing off the barrel of a shotgun is illegal). He did not cut his gun into little bits as reported in the headline of the story in the Sun.
As you should know, one of the reasons for the AR-15's popularity is its modularity. It is a simple matter to remove the barrel nut and what remains of his barrel and replace it with a brand new barrel.
I'm thinking Mr. Pappalardo has put so many rounds through his AR-15 that it was time for a new barrel. So he thought he would make a viral video while he was at it.

drwho, I hope he was a little more genuine in taking his AR15 out of service, as I hope many others that followed his lead also did.
