Is there a downside to dropping in greens when starting a new puzzle? Personally I became much better at crosshatching when I delayed automatic greens until after I had pushed crosshatching as far as possible.
Later I discovered the value of virtual crosshatching as a method of removing false greens. These days I do crosshatching, then manual greens, and then virtual crosshatching, and I never have to guess except with hard and expert puzzles. Is this consistent with other players' experiences?

Tallmike; crosshatching or scanning 1 thru 9's before going green seams like the best way to go. Unnecessary time wasted even if you 'auto-green'. Might be easier on teh eyesight also. Just an opinion

gman, thanks for your comments. I realize now I could have been more specific about my current methodology. It goes like this: initial crosshatching 1 thru 9 repeated twice or more, then manual greens (plus crosshatching whenever a single value cell is revealed), then virtual crosshatching 1 thru 9 to eliminate false greens. At that point easy and medium puzzles fall apart with further crosshatching, while hard and expert puzzles usually also require one or more cycles of selective elimination of alternatives unless there is an obvious chain which eliminates one of the alternatives.
