Thanks everyone for the ‘greens’ info... I’ve only been working them on my iPhone, so I had no idea!

Ah, that was more fun than yesterday's. Yes, it was easier, but it flowed nicely.

@TIlly138 - the problem with greens is that phones don't have any way to use the shift or alt keys (alt gives you red numbers).

Just completed puzzles from 2011, and (working backwards in the archives) am now starting those in 2010 (puzzle #1757). Have also started working forward from the beginning of time and am in Aug 2007 (puzzle #516). So if my math is correct, I've got 1241 archived puzzles left to complete; time frame to completion unknown ...

Good going Judy... I am fast losing interest *again* :/

Several pretty clever tricks including a unique rectangle. 18.

Kate - are you there? It's Origami.
6:28 pm
TraderKate
LOL I am here
6:29 pm

I have done Sudoku before, but not played here. What does "green" mean, and what is a unique rectangle? Confusion reigns :-)
6:30 pm
sherrell
And, of course, I'm Sherrell from FB
6:30 pm
TraderKate
don't worry about rectangles -
6:31 pm
sherrell
Ah, OK. Thought it was some fancy technique.
6:33 pm
TraderKate
dang, lost my comment...
6:33 pm
TraderKate
look in HELP abve.. tells you how to insert reds (NOT possible number) and greens (possuble numbers)
6:34 pm
sherrell
Got it - ty
6:34 pm
TraderKate
some of the better players have their own "language" to describe certain ways of ascertaining numbers...
6:35 pm
TraderKate
you ;can't do reds/greens from a phone apparently
6:36 pm
TraderKate
put a link in my profile here from Judy H that may help with solving... lots of links rom it.. but it may just confuse.
6:37 pm
TraderKate
rectangle is some fancy technique...but I didn't need anything fancy to finish this one.
6:38 pm
sherrell
TY, Kate. I think I knew a lot of those techniques - but not the "language"
6:40 pm
TraderKate
I think I have a lot of the techniques, but not the language, so I ignore comments like that in the chat... don't care enough about it to learn how the big boys talk ;)
6:41 pm
TraderKate
have you decided to take on sudoku to fill in when Babble is quiet? We gained several lately
6:42 pm
sherrell
Yeah, when I'm stuck and need to take a break.

Off to order a new laptop - my keyboard died (well, I murdered it with hot tea)
6:54 pm
TraderKate
it might not be dead... sit it in dry rice...open it up - you don't have anything to lose... maybe just a gentle wipe and let it dry
6:54 pm
TraderKate
(Think I saw you on a WANTED poster...)
6:55 pm
sherrell
It's shorted out :-( I'm using an external keyboard now.
6:56 pm

Don't turn me in for the reward, my friend
6:58 pm
TraderKate
LOL, external keyboards are bette than lappies anyway... not quite so esy to typo ;) ahem :/
rewrd was less than the price of a friendship

I agree about the Sudoku "lingo" ... different sites have different names for the same technique, and they are all different from what I (as an initially self-taught person) like to call them. I, too, had to ask what a Unique Rectangle was, but once I understood it, I found it useful (you need to use greens for it to make sense), I've found that using "greens" is the easiest and fastest way to solve the puzzles (I think that's why people are so excited when they solve puzzles without them). There is a great Javascript that you can use to automatically enter the greens, and this will help those doing puzzles on a phone or other non-keyboard device be able to use greens.

TraderKate
Hi Judy, one day I may look up what this wonderful rectangle is.. if I was motivated enough. <snicker>
Having a java script might be helpful - especially on a phone where you can't access the greens. Personally, I try to hold off on the greens because they do tend to clutter and add "noise". Not saying I don't use them, just don't need a lot of them most times.
9:39 pm
TraderKate
If there is a link for the "greens" javascript others might like it though. I'm on a PC, so don't mind doing things the hard way ;)

I don't know I how I would ever solve without using the green
10:46 pm
JudyHall
I put the automatic greens javascript in my profile (sorry, I don't remember whether I got this from drwho's page or from somewhere else). Anyway, you can copy and paste it into a bookmark for use with any browser on any device.
10:48 pm
TraderKate
TY Judy I might scoop it and put in profile as well... I put your Dr. Who link there (one day I might evenm read it)
;)
10:49 pm
JudyHall
From my perspective, most of the advanced techniques are simply ways to eliminate the "false greens" from each cell so that the correct value is the only green that is not eliminated.

TraderKate
ty Judy. I just do things the hard way, I guess... it only costs me time. I have only ever encountered one grid where I couldn't deduce and had to guess.. and likely that was because of a m inor mistake... it takes longer, but I get there in the end. I am sure there will come a time when I will be forced to do the reading n these grids, it's just not high on my priority list. I can do them, that's enough... I don't care if I do them in record time or not...
11:00 pm
JudyHall
I know what you mean, Kate. I am just trying to finish the archives before I lose interest. I can do the puzzles without greens but it takes a long time, and if I was only doing the "daily puzzle", then I'd probably do it the hard way (meaning "in my head"). But greens have made me lazy (chuckle) ...
11:05 pm
TraderKate
I hear ya, Judy.. my interest is waning quickly... i have been doing the archives, but have miles to go.. once i know what I'm doing, it doesn't interest me much any more. I am jsut bored with them. Don't see them as my Mr. Everest...just another time waster (and brain exercise) there is value, just not enough to keep me working away on the old ones for very long. I have left off sudoku for months at a time....
11:12 pm
JudyHall
Finishing the archives is useful for me only in the sense that it is an activity that I can do while I sit in Bill's presence (this comforts him). Yes, these puzzles are time wasters, and there are so many other things that I could (and should) be doing, but right now, providing support and comfort to Bill is higher on my priority list.
11:15 pm
TraderKate
This isn't really for the chat, but have you been following what Kamanjah has been posting? I shoul go to FB and write you - I have been AWOL for quite a while from FB...
11:16 pm
TraderKate
I am glad you have something to occupy you when with Bill. dust bunnies mean nothing, comfort to you both is highest priority.
11:18 pm
JudyHall
will touch base with you on FB, Kate, so that the chat remains sudoku related
11:22 pm
TraderKate
just forwarded you an e-mail... haven't even read it myself yet. May not be applicable...sounds good though
11:24 pm
TraderKate
the chat on here for years was nothing more than ding-done...ng,ng etc. not really worried about putting non-sudoku stuff, since suddenly people are posting political stuff here ?!?!
11:29 pm
JudyHall
Count me among the few that believe (quite adamantly) that the political and other controversial posts do NOT belong in the Sudoku chat, and that the Sudoku chat should at least be in some way related to Sudoku ... so I don't want to be hypocritical
11:32 pm
harpjane
I think I'll have most of the summer to work through the archives, since I'm supposed to keep my leg elevated....sigh.
11:42 pm
JudyHall
There are only so many sudoku puzzles that I can do each day before my eyes glaze over, Jane (chuckle) ... thank goodness for Babble! ... wish you successful healing

When I first broke my leg I thought thank goodness for March Madness....
