An X-Wing is a rectangle or X formed by two rows having only two cells where a given number may be placed.

yeah, I had always thought it had to do with number /pairs/. but it can be just one number...much easier (for me) to apply.

Call the cells 1a and 1b and 2a and 2b. 1a and 2a share a row, 1b and 2b share a row.

You know it can't go in 1a and 1b or 2a and 2b, so it must be either 1a and 2b or 1b and 2a.

The opposite corners of the rectangles, or one line in the X.

So since it must be one or the other, the candidate number cannot appear anywhere else in row a or b.

Looks like you got it already, mirrin, but I thought it might be helpful to someone.

I like to think of it as a see-saw.

look up a diagram and read what he wrote, if it's still difficult. it can be easier if you are looking at a diagram.

The candidate number is on both ends of the see-saw; it's going to be tilted one way or the other.

if you are in the same place i was theres a way to determine the 3rd column's 3 using a swordfish technique though i cant be very spesific because it changed alot about my puzzle after that

and theres a good example of what a swordfish would look like in 7s near the upper right corner of the puzzle

on that you can always figure out even the evils one move at a time, but here you can't necessarily on expert - you might have to guess or use some techniques i haven't figured out yet like x and y chains and 3D medusas

I'm still a beginner at the fancy techniques, but have been able to solve them so far...so far...

I got it all the way to the force, and then had to type it in Simple Sudoku to get the hint on which technique was next. Those are nearly impossible to do online here without the extra colors.

I, err, turned to Simple Sudoku for a hint--but did have to figure out what it was telling me

I turned to a few places for a hint and they all got stuck the same place I did until I enabled guess and check

Start in the bottom boxes and eliminate the numbers in the furthest right row which can only be in that row in the middle box...whatever technmique that is... bottom right and middle was my breakthrough

One very general thing that I found helpful today was first marking possibilities only when a number could appear twice in a group

about time. did the puzzle twice. was stuck at exact same point both times. used the print-screen-button then pasted to image editor to refer back to first attempt. had to finally guess, then the rest solved after the one guess. wish i could see the next move after the place i got stuck twice.
