Our TV has been running with the most absurd news… only from America… obstacles removed by Trump to allow internet sales of 3D printed guns, so now any mentally ill, terrorist, criminal or just stupid idiot can print something out of plastic that's going to be very much harder to detect by school, office, airport, hotel, nightclub, hospital and other security checkpoints, and of course with no serial numbers virtually untraceable. This has got be amongst the most absurd, illogical, farcical decision in the whole absurdity that is the US gun laws.

All part of the crumbling of the American republic, Phil. Sit back and enjoy the show.

Phil and Angie, there is a temporary court-imposed block on the 3d printed guns instructions as several states are suing to prevent these from going online.

The files needed to 3D print a gun have already been downloaded thousands of times. The "person" who made them available is a radical libertarian. I would not be surprised Phil and Angie if these plans have already been downloaded by like minded people in Canada or Oz.

As much as I love you Angie, I have to disagree about American republic crumbling right now. If November does not turn out as I believe it will, then I will agree with you. But for now this may be what we as Americans need. The electorate needs to be motivated to vote in great enough numbers to stop this s*** show.

The 3D-printed gun panic is definitely overblown. (a) Few people have access to a 3D printer, and public ones (e.g. libraries, services) can screen for what is being printed. (b) The 3D-printed gun (last time I read about it) is a single-shot pistol, not a semi-automatic that can spray lots of bullets, and has a fairly high chance of misfire. Guns like that can be made out of all kinds of materials.

The biggest thing is that there is no way to prevent the dissemination of such files -- you can't keep copyrighted materials off YouTube or new designer variants on meth and opioids (legal until identified and legislated), let alone public-domain info like this. Scan every file being downloaded for the info? Just change it a little -- a logo on the side, add wings and a tail, etc. -- and it's too different to tell.
I am not a fan of guns at all, but I don't see this as being something solved by legislating the digital files.

I am amazed by how many people here cannot handle freedom. It's too scary for them.

In the New Jersey case, Cody Wilson agreed to block users in New Jersey from downloading the plans from his site. Sounds more like communist China than the United States.

I think the whole debate over the 3-D printed gun instructions is ridiculous. One can find instructions on making vastly more dangerous weapons than a handgun on the internet. I do strongly believe in gun control, but we cannot and should not legislate access to information. Keep in mind, this is coming from a wild-eyed liberal :D

drwho People here cannot handle freedom, because they don't understand it at all. The book I'm reading now is 'Bloodlands.' That's where my parents came from. I KNOW what freedom means. Agree with tuco, we wait for November and the children's vote.

HK: There is no doubt freedom is risky and even dangerous. It is a choice the American people made 242 years ago. It seems their descendants are changing their minds on the subject.
