Phil, I followed Michael Mosely's 5-2 FastDiet for about 2 1/2 years and at one point had lost 25 pounds, although I think part of that was due to a leg infection which kept me on antibiotics for six weeks. I found the 5-2 diet challenging because I experienced frequent strong urges to eat. After the leg infection I put most of the weight back on again (around 20 pounds).

In contrast, using Dr Fung's intermittent fasting for the last six weeks, I have happily done several 36 to 40 hour fasts (and a few shorter ones) with no solid food at all and just water, green tea, chamomile tea and black coffee to drink. During those fasts I have not experienced any urges to eat, not even when I helped my wife prepare a couple of meals for herself or sat with her while she was eating. I'm finding it a lot easier, especially because there are no tiny meals to prepare as there are with the Mosely's 5-2.

Thanks, Tall Mike - will do some research on cortisol one of these days. Can't recall if previous routine blood tests revealed a figure. Meanwhile, I'll keep on solving as long as the Red Sox keep winning.
