*snerk* Yeah, these immigrants are totally the Allies at Normandy. Fear for us.
Look, they're not going to overwhelm the system. They're going to strain it a little--the US already processes, on a regular basis, around 7,000 asylum requests per month. An extra few thousand will make an impact, but it's nothing we can't handle; a surge can be worked through.
If we wanted to obey our own laws, we'd be sending extra lawyers, judges, and translators to the borders. If we had a smidge of humanity, we'd be transporting them here so they wouldn't be walking.
And getting them here, feeding them, housing them, processing the applications--that would also be *significantly* less expensive than sending troops down there.
So the kind response would also be the practical response would also be the legal response.
Naturally, the Republican party being neither kind nor practical nor giving a fuck about the law, has not decided to go with that option.
