12:00 am
spellacked
just got it at midnite
12:03 am
lawfully
expert... oooh
12:21 am
lawfully
after a while I just got one number
12:34 am
augurus
is the loneliest number.
12:34 am
itzie
Yeah, I got that one too... it's pretty tough so far.
12:35 am
lawfully
now I have 4 numbers
12:35 am
Denise
I would hate to guess this early
12:36 am
augurus
I would hate to guess at all: use your head.
12:42 am
Denise
you have to guess eventually with this one
12:46 am
augurus
Disagree.
12:48 am
Denise
I'm not done yet. I'll let you know when I take my first guess.
12:49 am
lawfully
anyone went past the first 3 numbers?
12:49 am
itzie
I have four so far.
12:49 am
moe
I just got 4
12:50 am
lawfully
I've got 4 too. So, again, anyone over 5 without guess?
12:50 am
Womprat
I have 6 without guess, and think that I am close on some others.
12:51 am
itzie
I just got 5
12:51 am
itzie
I just got 5
12:51 am
itzie
And I don't know why that posted twice - sorry.
12:53 am
itzie
8 no guesses
12:54 am
lawfully
got 5 too
12:55 am
itzie
I'm worried that i screwed up now since after hitting 5, the next 3 were easy...
1:00 am
lawfully
I'm a little annoyed
1:01 am
lawfully
I feel like I'm stupid
1:01 am
kangabrat
relax, lawfully. i only have 3.
1:02 am
augurus
Wait, wait, someone didn't feel stupid to begin with? That's almost a crime. Actually, what's the crime here is ending with a preposition. Sh!t.
1:02 am
itzie
I'm betting I've made a mistake. I found mine with "hidden pairs" mostly.
1:03 am
kangabrat
ok, itzie. what's a hidden pair?
1:03 am
moe
i haven't used any hidden pairs yet
1:03 am
kangabrat
on behalf of all the people feeling stupid here...
1:04 am
lawfully
thanks, that helps
1:04 am
itzie
It's when there's a box/row/column or something where there are two squares where there are a pair of numbers that have to be in those two squares... I SUCK at explaining things... sorry
1:05 am
kangabrat
no, that's good itzie. didn't know that was what they were called. thanks.
1:05 am
itzie
So, let's say in the middle box there are two squares where a 5 and a 3 can appear, but the 5 and 3 can be in no other boxes in that square....
1:09 am
moe
it just broke wide open for me
1:10 am
moe
keep hunting, its all there
1:11 am
moe
night everyone
1:41 am
lawfully
anyone else still here?
1:42 am
lawfully
glad someone else's doing this...
1:43 am
itzie
I'm still here too... but still unfortunately stuck where I was.
1:43 am
Denise
yeah and I am working on a guess after 4
1:44 am
lawfully
mee too, feeling ever stupid
1:44 am
Denise
challenging
1:44 am
Womprat
This one is much harder than the expert the other day
1:44 am
Womprat
At least for me
1:46 am
Onpaki
i hv 10 & stuck
1:46 am
itzie
yep, that's where I am too
1:54 am
itzie
This should SO be worth more than 5 pts.
2:05 am
augurus
No guesses. Finally finished.
2:19 am
Denise
Had to start from where I guessed and found 2 easy ones.
6:09 am
eyeman
Gee, this one was trouble from the start. Took over an hour to get it.
6:11 am
h
im still stuck at the 4-filled point... any clues on how to get the 5th?
6:26 am
Andy
chains chains and chains
6:29 am
Moozey
wow at first glance not a lot of numbers going in...this looks like a toughie!!
6:30 am
Andy
Let's just say that, while I have completed it, the dent in my desk and my concussion were a steep price.
6:31 am
h
thanx - guess ill have to learn chains better...
6:32 am
Frances
Will someone please explain chains to me.
6:32 am
h
i got fifth filled, but am still using advanced crosshatching basically...
6:33 am
h
chains can be looked up at scanraid.com...
6:33 am
Andy
http://www.scanraid.com/AdvanStrategies.htm
6:33 am
Frances
Thank you
6:33 am
Andy
I'd try to 'splain but I'd just make a mess of it.
6:35 am
Moozey
see you in an hour smooth_pappa, if previous posts are anything to go by ;o)
6:35 am
smooth_pappa
if it takes me that long, I'll have to come back later. leaving for work in about an hour
6:36 am
smooth_pappa
but I can see this is a slow starting one
6:37 am
Moozey
Well I am eating lunch...so I only have an hour to kill
6:39 am
Andy
hmmm... caching up to smooth_pappa in the rankings... must... play... more... puzzles...
6:40 am
Andy
oh darn... i have to go to work soon too :)
6:40 am
smooth_pappa
hehehe
6:40 am
smooth_pappa
danged real world ;)
6:40 am
Andy
moozey, it's lunch time there? that means you're in the future. What's going to happen?
6:41 am
Moozey
I would say a damn tricky sudoku will be solved but perhaps not hahaha. So not a lot in my world....hopefully things will be more interesting for you
6:42 am
Moozey
though a kids on hoverboards have just flown passed me
6:42 am
Andy
At least it's Friday... where I work, we're allowed (in the summer) to do 9 hours M-Th and then take 1/2 Friday off. So, I'm thinking of taking my son to the beach later.
6:43 am
smooth_pappa
same here, andy, except the kid and beach part
6:43 am
Moozey
oh that would be cool. I work for a US company and I believe they are allowed to do that too but just not here in the UK :o(
6:44 am
Andy
Wonder if it's the same company...
6:44 am
Moozey
I don't know do you have the Time ;o)
6:45 am
smooth_pappa
same company as me, andy? or as Moozy?
6:45 am
smooth_pappa
I know we don't work for the same company. I work foir these guys: www.guild.com, and I know all our employees
6:45 am
Andy
Moozey... I work for Pfizer. Well, I work for a company that has me contracted to a company that has a contract at Pfizer...
6:46 am
Moozey
My parent company is Time Inc
6:46 am
Andy
I fill out a lot of timesheets.
6:47 am
h
question - i know that checkpoints work across browser-sessions, but do they work across days? im thinking of giving up and doing this another day...
6:47 am
Andy
I believe they do
6:48 am
Moozey
only works if you are a paid up subscriber
6:48 am
Moozey
but I could be wrong
6:48 am
Andy
he is. notice his icon?
6:48 am
smooth_pappa
I think so, H. One time I was working in the archives, and had set a checkpoint. I ended up haveing to leave before I was done, and didn't get back until after the weekend. When I came back, it had my check[point saved
6:48 am
Andy
which, btw, is subtle and fantastic
6:49 am
h
guess ill find out. i only got 5 filled and am tired of staring at it... (yup, im paid up) ok - thanx!
6:49 am
Andy
h's icon, I mean
6:49 am
h
thanx for the compliment...
6:49 am
Moozey
then definitely works
6:49 am
smooth_pappa
HAHA! wow, I wouldn't have picked that up so early in the morning andy, thanks :)
6:54 am
smooth_pappa
18 filled in... this is a slow going one
6:59 am
smooth_pappa
DONE!
7:00 am
smooth_pappa
and yes, I used greens a couple of times
7:00 am
smooth_pappa
thanks!
7:01 am
smooth_pappa
starting out is the toughest part... after a while, it really falls together
7:07 am
NonoNanette
I really wish it would start falling together for me....
7:07 am
Atalante
I wish it would start for me!!
7:08 am
smooth_pappa
you guys can do it!
7:08 am
Andy
Ah... No No Nanette... the play that Frazee sold Babe Ruth to NY to fund...
7:08 am
NonoNanette
been staring at this for over an hour and only 4 filled in
7:09 am
Atalante
I've only got 1 filled in LOL. perhaps I need a nap
7:09 am
NonoNanette
Andy thats a fact I did not know about the play
7:09 am
Andy
It comes from being a Red Sox fan.
7:12 am
NonoNanette
only one hidden pair that I see but it doesnt seem to leed very far
7:13 am
smooth_pappa
all right you all, I must get ready for work. good luck with the puzzle, ad have a good wekend!
7:16 am
Andy
me too... later all!
7:24 am
kitara89
i probably shld be studying for my exam which is v v soon but here i m trying to work this puzzle out lol
8:28 am
jawilke
alright, another expert... go
8:34 am
drwho
New record, difficutly score 101! The program used a naked quad and a lot of guessing.
8:34 am
jawilke
uh oh, and I was hoping to finish before work...
8:36 am
jawilke
How many points for a guess?
8:37 am
jawilke
did it use coloring on the 5's?
8:39 am
drwho
No, the program only knows cross-hatching, missing digit scans, virtual cross-hatching and pairs, triples, quads, etc. After that it guesses.
8:39 am
jawilke
aww, no fun
8:39 am
jawilke
it should do everything you can do by eye
8:40 am
drwho
The solver at the scanraid site does that and tells you exactly what it did at each step.
8:42 am
jawilke
yeah, you told me about that last week
8:42 am
jawilke
I had been doing about each of them up to the APE
8:42 am
jawilke
I have to break out vi after that
8:43 am
jawilke
easier just to guess
8:43 am
drwho
vi? VIsual editor?
8:44 am
jawilke
yeah, to write out the possible pairs
8:44 am
jawilke
can't keep track of it on the board
8:44 am
herinfernallady
hi
8:44 am
herinfernallady
go
8:45 am
drwho
My favorite editor!
8:45 am
drwho
You must be a programmer. They like editors where the commands look like transmission line noise.
8:46 am
drwho
I should say we...
8:46 am
grisham2107
is this puzzle for real... there's only 23 numbers given.
8:46 am
herinfernallady
yes
8:46 am
jawilke
yep... been using eclipse though lately -- getting lazy :)
8:47 am
grisham2107
have anyone solved this puzzle...too difficult!
8:48 am
grisham2107
i got no. 1 but thats about it :-)
8:48 am
jawilke
ah, naked triple in the 6th column
8:48 am
drwho
Moe did last night, it took him about an hour.
8:49 am
jawilke
:) I did the last expert last night w/o greens
8:49 am
grisham2107
you guys are too good
8:49 am
jawilke
took almost 2 hours
8:49 am
grisham2107
this may take me a day or so
8:49 am
drwho
I haven't, but I ran my program in analysis only mode to get a score.
8:50 am
grisham2107
im still doing the 16th..its another "header"
8:50 am
jawilke
oh, using the head?
8:50 am
grisham2107
im losing hair
8:51 am
grisham2107
been pulling them a lot lately :-)
8:51 am
jawilke
did you get all of the 1s gris?
8:52 am
grisham2107
yep..
8:53 am
jawilke
did you have to chain to get the middle grids?
8:54 am
grisham2107
yep..but now im doing an adrienne thread
8:54 am
jawilke
talk about "too good for me"...
8:55 am
grisham2107
its a nice term for "guessing"
8:56 am
jawilke
ah, I think I'm there too
8:56 am
jawilke
I've only solved 5 cells though :)
8:56 am
grisham2107
oh well..im sure we'll rise to the challenge
8:57 am
grisham2107
got to go..its midnight now bedtime..ciao guys
8:59 am
jawilke
Ah hah, solved 3 more
9:00 am
drwho
According to the chatter last night after 5 the next 3 are easy, but I'm still stuck at 5.
9:00 am
jawilke
look at 6s and 8s down the left grid
9:03 am
jawilke
all the 5s just jumped out
9:08 am
jawilke
got 4th row :)
9:08 am
jawilke
8th column
9:09 am
jawilke
7th 8th 9th row
9:10 am
jawilke
required some coloring, but I don't remember any quads
9:10 am
drwho
Enjoy work.
9:14 am
herinfernallady
Is there any hints on where to start with this grid
9:42 am
drwho
H.I. Lady, use the greens.
9:54 am
UnikeTheHunter
Jeesh, so many experts lately!
9:55 am
drwho
This month sets a record, 5 experts so far and there are still 8 puzzles still to come.
9:55 am
UnikeTheHunter
And this one is so hard to get started.
9:57 am
greylurk
I found my first one within a few seconds, but this second is tough.
9:57 am
UnikeTheHunter
Ditto.
10:00 am
herinfernallady
Um Dr who i dont have greens
10:00 am
UnikeTheHunter
Got my second.
10:00 am
UnikeTheHunter
You need an autogreens?
10:01 am
drwho
Everyone has greens. After you click on an empty cell, hold the shift key while selecting a digit.
10:01 am
UnikeTheHunter
3.
10:01 am
drwho
Blind Mice.
10:02 am
herinfernallady
Um sorry to sound ignorant but was does that do?
10:02 am
waltzingandy
...or blind luck, in my case if I even manage to find 2!
10:02 am
moedog
i think i might've busted it open!
10:02 am
drwho
It puts a little green number in the cell. You can use them to mark the candidates for the cell.
10:03 am
moedog
aaagghh nooo!
10:03 am
herinfernallady
OH ok cool thanks
10:04 am
drwho
Use the Alt key to make marks in red, if that is any use to you.
10:04 am
herinfernallady
ok thanks
10:04 am
herinfernallady
I like green
10:05 am
hokie carla
just finished marking the greens. doesn't look too promising.
10:05 am
UnikeTheHunter
My profile has Autogreens. If you are using the Firefox browser, cut and paste everything from "javascript" to the end... paste it into your URL finding rectangle of Firefox and click the green triangle.
10:07 am
hokie carla
I prefer to mark them myself. Helps me see things I may not see.
10:08 am
UnikeTheHunter
I always make mistakes marking them myself. Then I mess up.
10:14 am
herinfernallady
thanks for you help
10:15 am
UnikeTheHunter
You're welcome. Not much happening with my puzzle. Still only 3.
10:15 am
herinfernallady
I got 1 the obvious one :)
10:18 am
UnikeTheHunter
The second that I got was a virtual crosshatch. The third a normal crosshatch.
10:19 am
UnikeTheHunter
4. An easy crosshatch.
10:20 am
herinfernallady
thanks i guess this is not the best grid to start as a newbie :)
10:21 am
UnikeTheHunter
You're probably right about that. But if you save your checkpoint you can try guesses. If there are not multiple guesses needed in this puzzle that usually works.
10:22 am
herinfernallady
I dont have saves anymore, what i am doing is putting any i find in a word format grid and saving tht
10:23 am
UnikeTheHunter
That works.
10:24 am
herinfernallady
kinda
10:25 am
herinfernallady
goodnight
10:25 am
UnikeTheHunter
Quitting?
10:26 am
UnikeTheHunter
4. Going green.
10:27 am
UnikeTheHunter
Good luck spellacked. This one is hard to get going.
10:27 am
spellacked
thanks, I see already
10:29 am
UnikeTheHunter
Greens help a lot.
10:32 am
UnikeTheHunter
Uh oh. Some mistake.
10:41 am
spellacked
youch -- after one complete cycle of cross-checking with greens, I have exactly 3 spots filled in.
10:42 am
UnikeTheHunter
It's like that.
10:42 am
moedog
does this remind anyone else of passing a kidney stone??
10:42 am
spellacked
nope, four
10:42 am
spellacked
five, boy I can' t see
10:43 am
UnikeTheHunter
I'm going to take a break. Good luck everyone.
10:52 am
spellacked
sorry, don't have time to finish (and haven't paid for checkpoinnts)
10:52 am
OrangeSlice
There's a naked pair in the upper-right that allows for some reductions.
10:57 am
Atalante
there is? wow i'm crap today!
11:00 am
OrangeSlice
Well, it's a hidden pair unless you use virtual crosshatching somewhere else which reveals it as a naked one.
11:01 am
Atalante
*continues slogging on*
11:04 am
hokie carla
is it just me, or is this the worst expert one ever?
11:04 am
OrangeSlice
nah, it just reduces slowly. I just found a triple along a column, let's see where it goes.
11:04 am
drwho
My program scores it 101, which is a new record.
11:05 am
hokie carla
aha, I knew it!
11:05 am
vivi1435
I'm not an expert or anything, but sometimes I get the experts....today I have one number!
11:05 am
OrangeSlice
I greened it after one.
11:05 am
hokie carla
me, too, vivi
11:05 am
hokie carla
me, too, OS
11:06 am
vivi1435
me too and I still only have one
11:07 am
hokie carla
of course I am not concentrating fully - watching the kids play the wii
11:07 am
OrangeSlice
Use the perpendicular 9's that are looking at the top-left box to do some virtual crosshatching and reveal a pair.
11:11 am
vivi1435
yay--I see it!!
1:00 pm
Krys10
OS - thanks for getting me started on that one - intersections are the worst for me
1:08 pm
janiceb75
Geez! I have found a whopping 5 numbers. lol
1:09 pm
raggedyandy3478
im at 5 numbers as well
1:10 pm
Krys10
yeah me too.
1:10 pm
janiceb75
glad I'm not alone! lol
1:11 pm
Krys10
*lots* of intersections :(
1:11 pm
raggedyandy3478
ill say
1:11 pm
janiceb75
definitely
1:13 pm
janiceb75
I can see where I think the numbers should go, but it really would be a guess. I'm not ready to start that after only 5 numbers.
1:13 pm
Krys10
ooh, x-wing
1:14 pm
Krys10
ok, i gotta leave for an appointment, will pick this up later. May resort to guessing by then :)
1:16 pm
Zugzug7
hey, I just got my first number on this one. may be in for a long sudoku session.
1:21 pm
Krys10
I think there's some agreement that is one of the most difficult puzzles we've seen on this site before
1:21 pm
raggedyandy3478
i would have to agree w/ that
1:21 pm
Zugzug7
I can believe that. Still only have one number so far.
1:22 pm
sinnergy
I'm still sitting at 5
1:23 pm
raggedyandy3478
im having trouble finding that x-wing that Krys is talking about
1:23 pm
Zugzug7
small breakthrough
1:25 pm
Zugzug7
found an 8. yipee
1:46 pm
Readhead
Wow. You know when it's taken you 20 minutes to find your first pair it's going to be a long haul...At least it's Friday :)
1:47 pm
Zugzug7
indded. I'm still stuck on 4 numbers
1:53 pm
Zugzug7
just went tothe sudoku solver. It had to guess too and said there may be more than one solution.
1:53 pm
drwho
Which solver was that?
1:54 pm
raggedyandy3478
do we know of anyone that solved it so far?
1:55 pm
drwho
Sure, jawilke and moe. I don't think they had to guess either.
1:55 pm
raggedyandy3478
as in moedog, or the other moe something?
1:56 pm
raggedyandy3478
oh
1:57 pm
janiceb75
this is hurting my brain!
2:00 pm
raggedyandy3478
well, i have other productive stuff that I have to get done, good luck everyone
2:01 pm
alex7777
done hehe
2:04 pm
Zugzug7
sorry work was calling. I used http://www.sudokusolver.co.uk/
2:20 pm
drwho
Maybe you should clear the check mark on the "Return first solution" option. That is probably preventing it from determining if the solution is unique.
2:22 pm
Zugzug7
it doesn't really seem to make any difference. You can't solve this puzzle logically.
2:22 pm
OrangeSlice
Found two numbers via AIC, but I'm about to had back to work (on lunch right now)
2:23 pm
drwho
Well, it does have a unique solution. The scanraid solver may be able to point you to techniques that logically solve it.
2:23 pm
OrangeSlice
Of course you can solve it logically.
2:24 pm
shiroro
This is pretty much the best puzzle ever. And by that I mean it makes me want to drive something through my left temple.
2:25 pm
janiceb75
lol nice way to put it! I decided to work on the archives a bit and clear my head....and remind myself that I actually DO know how to do these puzzles. I'll come back to todays later.
2:25 pm
drwho
OS -- I believe sudoku has been proven to be an NP complete problem (in the general case of arbitrary sized grids), so no finite set of solution techniques exist.
2:26 pm
drwho
There may be a finite set for the 9x9 grid though, but no one seems to know.
2:28 pm
OrangeSlice
I've found advanced sudoku techniques a lot easier to understand after taking a course in symbolic logic.
2:29 pm
OrangeSlice
Ah, but I have to go.
2:34 pm
spazzy
i'm not doing this. nope. no way.
3:16 pm
dorens
wow. i give up!
3:35 pm
Krys10
ok, I'm back *cracks knuckles*
3:38 pm
skizzybiz
you know, you'll get arthritis that way
3:41 pm
Krys10
yeah, that's what my piano teacher always told me
3:42 pm
skizzybiz
this puzzle is pretty ridiculous. i found that x-wing you mentioned before, but i'm still stuck at 4
3:43 pm
Krys10
I have five filled in, and I've been playing the elaborate game of what-if
3:43 pm
skizzybiz
or maybe it wasn't the one you mentioned...
3:43 pm
Krys10
my most advanced strategy
3:43 pm
hokie carla
yeah, I've got 8 right now by what-iffing
3:43 pm
Krys10
no, the x-wing i mentioned, although usually i crow about unique rectangles
3:43 pm
skizzybiz
ugh. no guessing chains for me. i'm just leaving the experts that i can't handle right now until i learn some new tricks
3:44 pm
UnikeTheHunter
I've got 5. I've colored every number red that appears exactly twice in any constituency. And I'm looking for the x-wing.
3:45 pm
Krys10
Let me know if you want a hint finding the x-wing
3:46 pm
UnikeTheHunter
I may have found it. Let me think a bit.
3:46 pm
UnikeTheHunter
No, not it.
3:47 pm
UnikeTheHunter
No hints.
3:47 pm
