Chatting to a waitress tonight who's just spent 18 months trying to live in New York. Said she was paid $0 per hour there and only income was tips, so if weather bad and few customers she might work all night for $20. Is there anywhere else in the western world where this is allowed?

BTW, she's paid the minimum wage here as Australians don't have a tipping culture and gets AUS$23.50 per hour. At least she can afford rent and food and is enjoying herself.

Friends we were with have just come back from a trip through Europe and Canada with a quick detour into the US. Service in the US was rubbish, crap coffee and appallingly unhealthy breakfast menu. Very disappointed. I was only there nearly 40 years ago. Is it worth visiting or should we stick to Canada?
