12:28 am
Slaal
Me too. It's impressive how much easier this one was than yesterdays...
12:43 am
WHB
I worked a couple of hours on yesterday and gave up on it.
12:45 am
Womprat
I can't believe I actually had enough of my brain left to finish today's after yesterday's expert.
4:32 am
h
well, i can vouch that checkpoints get saved across days... i left yesterdays with 5 filled and it is still that way. (was hoping maybe itd autosolve or something) ;)
4:32 am
h
todays was hard enough - im leaving yesterdays for someday i need the torture... :)
8:31 am
smooth_pappa
done
8:47 am
sprite
yesterday's was ugly. This one is easy.
8:55 am
UnikeTheHunter
Hoping to finish today's with time enough to go back and finish yesterday's.
9:15 am
drwho
Hello Caveman, thanks for the hint yesterday. It helped even though I was very slow to figure it out.
9:16 am
jawilke
yah, it was like 20 steps in :)
9:16 am
jawilke
how long did it take to finish?
9:16 am
drwho
All day, on and off.
9:17 am
jawilke
todays is much easier
9:17 am
drwho
The most satisfying thing was knowing I didn't have to guess.
9:18 am
jawilke
yeah, same here
9:18 am
jawilke
before that site you gave me, i thought you had to guess for experts
9:19 am
drwho
You may still have to guess sometimes.
9:19 am
drwho
Remember Computer Science? Sudoku is NP complete.
9:20 am
jawilke
I had this theory that whenever I "solved" one, I had made a favorable mistake somewhere :)
9:20 am
UnikeTheHunter
I've forgotten what NP complete means.
9:20 am
jawilke
NP complete or NP hard...
9:21 am
UnikeTheHunter
"Not Possible" to Complete?
9:22 am
drwho
Basically there is no technique or finite set of techniques to solve all sudoku puzzles (in the general case of arbitrary sized grids).
9:23 am
UnikeTheHunter
So, it might be that following a trail won't show you anything till the last move, which is the same as guessing.
9:23 am
jawilke
So the scan raid techniques will fail ?
9:25 am
drwho
Scanraid is continually adding new techniques and he is looking for puzzles that can't be solved with any of his current techniques.
9:26 am
jawilke
Hmm, he should put up the list of puzzles that aren't currently solved...
9:27 am
drwho
Since we only do 9x9 puzzles and there is a finite number of them possible (someone has calculated it), it seems likely that there is a finite number of techniques needed to solve 9x9 grids.
9:29 am
UnikeTheHunter
But it's possible that one technique may be no more clever than a guess.
9:30 am
jawilke
Hmm, i just started calculating the number of 9x9 grids... wondering if I should remove symmetric puzzles
9:33 am
UnikeTheHunter
Caveman, did you do today's without greens?
9:34 am
drwho
9 factorial times 8 factorial ... times 2 factorial times 1 minus the number of puzzles that don't have unique blocks divided by all the rotations and permutations on the rows and columns and there you have it.
9:35 am
jawilke
no, I'm still in the afterglow of solving wednesday's expert w/o greens :)
9:37 am
drwho
You mean Tuesday's expert? There has been an expert every Tuesday this month so far.
9:37 am
UnikeTheHunter
I don't think DrWho's formula takes count of forbidden cells within blocks.
9:37 am
drwho
Read it again.
9:37 am
drwho
I don't know how to do that, but I mentioned it.
9:38 am
jawilke
or which cells can be empty?
9:39 am
drwho
I only gave an outline of calculating the number of completely solved puzzles, not the number of clues that could be given.
9:40 am
drwho
I don't think that would be possible to calculate.
9:40 am
jawilke
ah, so "puzzles that don't have unique blocks" is ...
9:40 am
jawilke
oooh, wikipedia Mathematics of Sudoku
9:43 am
jawilke
We were talking of classifying the NP-ness of sudoku by the finite number of puzzles to feed any algorithm
9:45 am
jawilke
I guess there are a set of algorithms that can be applied to a sudoku solution to walk it back to a minimal yet still uniquely solvable puzzle
9:46 am
jawilke
later all
9:47 am
UnikeTheHunter
Dr, is it possible to construct a Sudoku without a computer?
9:48 am
drwho
Sure, why not? The computer programs were developed because the first sudokus appeared in magazines that needed a new puzzle every week or maybe month. So they couldn't afford the time of hand generated puzzles.
9:49 am
UnikeTheHunter
How would one go about constructing one by hand?
9:49 am
drwho
Anything a computer can do, a person can do better (but slower).
9:50 am
UnikeTheHunter
Yes, but at some point slowness will be a limiting factor.
9:52 am
drwho
I would start by generating the solution. Scramble the 9 digits for the first row. Then place digits in the remaining rows watching that you don't violate the constraints of uniqueness. Finally try subtracting all but about 18 - 25 of the digit and see if the puzzle has a unique solution by hand solving it.
9:53 am
drwho
Gauss wrote a paper on generating Latin Squares which might interest you. If I can find a link I will pass it on.
10:00 am
skizzybiz
that was a nice break from yesterday. one naked pair unlocked the whole thing
10:00 am
drwho
Oops, my memory is bad, it was Euler that wrote the paper I read. In fact some people refer to them as Euler Squares.
10:01 am
drwho
I've found a complimentary pair of pairs, one naked and one hidden, but I only got 1 digit from them.
10:03 am
drwho
No wait I found a 3rd hidden pair and a complimentary naked triple...but still only 1 digit solved from them.
10:05 am
UnikeTheHunter
I think I'm over the hump in today's, no greens, and I don't think I've used anything but crosshatch and virtual crosshatch.
10:06 am
UnikeTheHunter
Uh oh. But I've made some mistake.
10:07 am
UnikeTheHunter
I think my checkpoint is good.
10:07 am
skizzybiz
maybe i was just in the groove today :)
10:07 am
drwho
Congrats skizzy. Maybe I burnt out on yesterdays.
10:09 am
skizzybiz
well, i still haven't finished yesterday's, so there's that
10:10 am
skizzybiz
i've got a bit of a backlog since i decided not to guess for experts and not to use greens for hards -- and then work got really busy
10:10 am
UnikeTheHunter
Well, I'm going to bum out and use greens on today's. Getting too tired to think.
10:11 am
UnikeTheHunter
Darn. There's a loner I missed. How did that happen?
10:12 am
UnikeTheHunter
Well, it was pretty open, 4 or 5 open cells in each constituency.
10:18 am
UnikeTheHunter
Oh, darn it. I've made a mistake, probably before my checkpoint. I'll have to start again. Later.
10:24 am
andy99
my mum's just told me that in a book of sudoku puzzles she has, one is 16 x 16 with hexadecimal numbers
10:26 am
skizzybiz
yeah, those are fun, if a bit headache-inducing
10:49 am
Krys10
done. such a relief after yesterday's fiasco. Didn't even need intersections - all cross-hatching, naked doubles and triples, etc.
10:56 am
drwho
UTH -- A translation of Leonhard Euler's paper "De Quadratis Magicis" (On Magic Squares) can be found at:
http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0408230v6
Thi
s page is just an abstract, in the upper right hand corner there is a link that downloads a PDF file of it.
11:05 am
mamabear
I wouldn't believe yesterday's is possible except for the fact that are still elite people!
11:06 am
mamabear
the most difficult I've seen in here - or is it just me?
11:06 am
skizzybiz
drwho said it had a difficulty score over 100
11:07 am
mamabear
I am greened and don't know where to begin
11:07 am
drwho
Yes, 101, the highest score for any puzzle published here.
11:08 am
mamabear
I've never gotten too deep into the workings of those XYZ swordfish, jellyfish, clownfish theories..... imagine this one is impossible without all that techno stuff
11:10 am
drwho
The advanced techniques I used were, X-Wings, Almost Locked Sets and Alternating Inference Chains.
11:10 am
mamabear
gives me a headache just reading your message
11:11 am
skizzybiz
alright, enough of this. i've got some pants to patch and bikes to fix
11:11 am
mamabear
did you get yesterday's skizzy?
11:12 am
mamabear
I'm on my third try
11:12 am
skizzybiz
i'm still on my first try -- i'm going to go back and read the hints that drwho said he used
11:13 am
mamabear
where do you find them?
11:13 am
skizzybiz
all those advanced techniques take a while to learn, but they're fairly intuitive once you do. that's why i'm confident that i'll be able to complete the experts if i just leave them for later
11:13 am
mamabear
I mean I know what he said he used, but where do you find the descriptions of what they are?
11:13 am
skizzybiz
in the chat log -- read over today's and yesterday's
11:14 am
mamabear
I agree - I did look into them a while back, but usually can manage to do the puzzles without too much of that - this one is different
11:14 am
skizzybiz
oh, that
11:14 am
skizzybiz
http://www.scanraid.com/AdvanStrategies.htm
11:14 am
mamabear
thanks!
11:14 am
skizzybiz
but i would suggest actually reading over the chat logs, too, because there are some slightly more specific hints
11:15 am
mamabear
okee doke! muchas grasias!
11:15 am
skizzybiz
later!
11:16 am
spazzy
now that one was fun.
11:16 am
mamabear
maybe I should do today's and come back to this one
11:16 am
mamabear
but I don't know if what I did so far is right and if I save it and it's wrong, I'll have to start over..... uggggg
11:18 am
drwho
??? if you don't save it you'll have to start over too ???
11:18 am
mamabear
back to the beginning greenies
11:32 am
mamabear
HA! Yesterday's is done!!! No theories - just good old fashioned logic!!!!!
11:34 am
mamabear
*curtsey* thank you, dr!
11:34 am
mamabear
t'was a challenge though .....
11:34 am
mamabear
today's is better I hope
11:35 am
mamabear
I do applaud your abilities with the theories though - maybe someday I can hibernate for a bit and think them through
11:36 am
drwho
Theories are nothing more than old fashioned logic in fancy dress.
11:36 am
mamabear
geez... on the surface, today's doesn't look much better
11:37 am
mamabear
good point, dr.... never thought of it that way
11:48 am
drwho
I gave in and went green. Like UTH I had missed a missing digit scan. After that it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
11:49 am
mamabear
You tried to do it without even greens? wow
11:49 am
drwho
I usually do them without green, except the experts.
11:50 am
mamabear
you talking about yesterday's or today's?
11:50 am
drwho
I think I have done 2 experts without green.
11:50 am
mamabear
well now that I see you are a computer programmer.... makes more sense!
11:50 am
mamabear
I just greened today's... we'll see what happens
11:52 am
mamabear
I try to do with no green first.... sometimes works
11:53 am
OrangeSlice
I can do hard ones without greens about half of the time.
11:53 am
mamabear
hi orange!
11:53 am
OrangeSlice
Good morning
11:54 am
drwho
Occasionally an easy requires green for me too.
11:54 am
mamabear
dr - what do you mean by "missing digits"?
11:54 am
OrangeSlice
Well, yeah, it really depends on the puzzle.
11:54 am
OrangeSlice
I'll admit to using greens on the occasional easy/medium one.
11:55 am
mamabear
the ratings can be misleading sometimes I've found
11:55 am
drwho
UTH calls them loners. When you look at an empty cell and its buddies to see what's already there. If only 1 digit is missing it must go in the empty cell.
11:56 am
mamabear
ok - that's what I thought
11:57 am
drwho
Difficulty score for today's: 29. After yesterday's it didn't seem that hard.
11:57 am
OrangeSlice
I didn't find time to finish yesterday's yet. Any hints?
11:58 am
drwho
But I did have to use the little green numbers, so maybe...
11:58 am
mamabear
I filled in the 1s first, Orange
11:58 am
drwho
Lots of good hints in the chat log from yesterday.
11:58 am
NatLT
Nick are you on?
11:59 am
OrangeSlice
Alright then. I got a good ways into it and made several eliminations, but had to stop due to life interceding. lol
12:05 pm
mamabear
I am in the barrel, dr!
12:05 pm
drwho
Better get out or you'll get shot.
12:06 pm
mamabear
or should I say outside the barrel, shooting in? LOL
12:06 pm
drwho
Oh, good, I only want to shoot fish, bears are out of season.
12:07 pm
mamabear
LOL!!! That was much easier than yesterday! did both in an hour and a half - too much time to spend, but worth the effort I guess
12:08 pm
drwho
You are improving your mind, never a waste of time.
12:08 pm
OrangeSlice
I'm just going to green this one, I'm feeling lazy.
12:08 pm
mamabear
exactically!
12:09 pm
mamabear
go ahead and green, orange!
12:10 pm
mamabear
it is pouring down rain - so NOT FAIR for a Saturday!!!!!
12:12 pm
drwho
Clear and sunny in Minneapolis. We had the rain yesterday.
12:12 pm
mamabear
worked 55 hours this week - was looking forward to R & R in the pool.... grrrrrrrrrrr
12:13 pm
drwho
Well if you're going to get wet anyway...
12:13 pm
mamabear
no fun without the sun
12:13 pm
OrangeSlice
I've had the last week and a half off :). Back to school Monday though.
12:14 pm
drwho
Summer session? You must be in a hurry.
12:14 pm
OrangeSlice
I'm a little behind.
12:14 pm
mamabear
or very ambitious
12:15 pm
OrangeSlice
Well, that too.
12:15 pm
drwho
Like the butcher who backed into the meat grinder...
12:15 pm
drwho
...he got a little behind in his work.
12:16 pm
OrangeSlice
I only have 31 credits after a full year, so I'm doing 10 this summer and 17 in the Fall.
12:16 pm
OrangeSlice
I need 110 to transfer, and I was hoping to get there in two years.
12:17 pm
mamabear
LOL, dr
12:17 pm
drwho
I seem to remember 15 credits was considered a full load.
12:17 pm
mamabear
what is your major, orange?
12:18 pm
drwho
Are you on the quarter system or semesters?
12:18 pm
OrangeSlice
Quarterly
12:18 pm
OrangeSlice
Double major. Music theory and math ed.
12:18 pm
drwho
Ah...so 2 years would normally get you 90 credits and you want 20 more.
12:18 pm
mamabear
nice - my favorites
12:19 pm
mamabear
or two of them anyway
12:19 pm
drwho
What instruments do you play?
12:20 pm
OrangeSlice
Piano
12:21 pm
drwho
I play a little piano, very poorly. I do better with trumpet and euphonium.
12:21 pm
mamabear
I play piano too!
12:21 pm
mamabear
but rather rusty now
12:22 pm
OrangeSlice
I played trumpet and baritone a long time ago, in school. A little percussion also.
12:22 pm
mamabear
oompa, oompa, oompa pa
12:22 pm
OrangeSlice
I think the timpani was my favorite from back then
12:23 pm
mamabear
we have a timpani with one of the choirs I sing with - way cool
12:23 pm
drwho
It's hard to take the timpani home to practice :-).
12:24 pm
OrangeSlice
Tons of fun to play :)
12:24 pm
mamabear
need a rather large backpack
12:25 pm
drwho
And a strong back.
12:25 pm
mamabear
rain rain, go away, come again another day.......
12:27 pm
mamabear
can't be heavier than the piano though - that was always a problem I remember
12:32 pm
mamabear
how ya doin, orange?
12:33 pm
OrangeSlice
Getting distracted
12:34 pm
mamabear
hope it's a fun one!
12:34 pm
mamabear
this rain is depressing.... think I'm going to go shopping!
12:35 pm
OrangeSlice
haha. I wish I had more than $20 in my checking account.
12:35 pm
mamabear
that's why you are going to school, orange - so in the future you won't have to ever worry!
12:36 pm
OrangeSlice
Actually I'm going to school just because I want to. Although I suppose I might go to work when I'm done.
12:37 pm
mamabear
LOL.... yeah, that would be a good idea!
12:37 pm
OrangeSlice
We'll see.
12:37 pm
mamabear
depends on how far that $20 can stretch, I suppose!
12:38 pm
OrangeSlice
Well, my school offered me a part-time job this summer, so I'll be making a little bit.
12:41 pm
OrangeSlice
I also do peer tutoring, funded by the school, which is $9/hr, but only a few hours a week (if that)
12:41 pm
mamabear
better than nothing!
12:41 pm
OrangeSlice
Pays for all the lattes I buy.
12:43 pm
mamabear
well, I'm going to go do something with this wet day - thanks for the chat and have a good day, orange, and dr.who if you're still here
12:43 pm
OrangeSlice
Have a nice day, then.
12:44 pm
mamabear
thanks - you too!
12:44 pm
mamabear
before I go, can one of yo see if my profile updated? I tried but it doesn't look like it worked right
12:45 pm
mamabear
all I had before was my location
12:45 pm
OrangeSlice
Appears that it did
12:45 pm
drwho
How would I know? What is new?
12:46 pm
mamabear
ok good! thank you......
12:46 pm
OrangeSlice
I think the lengthy bio is new :)
12:46 pm
mamabear
that's why I said all I had before was my location
12:46 pm
mamabear
I copied it from my Babble profile......
12:46 pm
mamabear
ok yes - it's good then
12:48 pm
mamabear
thanks! see ya's in the funny papers......
1:17 pm
UnikeTheHunter
Today's quite easy. A little virtual crosshatch, open pairs, that's all. But the pairs not easy to see without green, as they are separated by a long distance and caused by different factors. So I used greens and got through it quickly. Too bad I made a mistake the first time.
2:58 pm
sandbox74
I will agree... Compared with yesterday's expert... this was a cakewalk
3:24 pm
andy99
I'm doing yesterday's, very slowly
3:25 pm
helenkeller
i am doing today's, very slowly, lol
3:36 pm
Inge
I did today's very slowly ----and failed!
3:39 pm
helenkeller
minimal greens needed
3:39 pm
andy99
I still have only 5 numbers added so far
3:40 pm
andy99
I didn't use any greens for today's
3:40 pm
andy99
I didn't use any greens for today's
3:49 pm
Chpster
I've just added 'X-Wing' to my repertoire. I found one in today's puzzle. Done!
3:51 pm
andy99
finishes yesterday's and don't know how I did it!

Piece of pie . . .
7:17 pm

had to use greens but I finished
