Diane, the court ban on reporting was to ensure a fair second trial. This is standard practice and although I am not party to the decision to drop the second prosecution I fear one of the reasons was that the international press who chose to release the news could well have prejudiced the jury in the second trial. That could then have also opened up the prospect of getting that verdict overturned which would have put more pressure on getting the first verdict overturned. Fairness to all is paramount in our court system.

It was certainly not unusual to impose the temporary restrictions, but it was very much outrageous for foreign news outlets to disregard the court. Sadly they can't be charged for contempt of court. If the press want our respect they should earn it and sadly they are very much eroding the trust of most people. I thought better of the Washington Post, guess I was wrong.
