loushka, thank you for asking me to explain the strange technique I described.
Some experts have several independent decision points (locked pair or triple). It can become tedious to resolve each decision point separately when some attempts seem to produce no decisive result. That's why I said I kept getting stuck on yesterday's expert.
In such a circumstance, testing each of the possible values in a cell with five or six greens is an entirely different experience. It is actually more efficient than resolving decision points one by one because it involves only a maximum of five attempts, some of which will fail almost immediately, and you have a 50/50 chance of resolving all the independent decision points in only three tests.

Angie, the following link will show a javascript for automatic sudoku greens.. http://www.pauls-pc-repair.com/sudoku/index.p\nhp?page=GreenBookmark...
copy the resulting script and bookmark it. when you're on a particular iron sudoku puzzle page, copy the bookmark to the URL. Go to the start of that URL and type javascript: Then enter and the greens should appear on the puzzle. On any subsequent puzzle, just paste from bookmark, add the javascript: and enter

Interesting TallMike, the same question rolled through my mind. From experience, I know the majority of the time, those pairs get you nowhere - fast.

What are you complaining about, Phil? You haven't even reached 30 minutes of puzzle time on yesterday's expert yet. Look at this in perspective - solving it took one of the top ranked expert players on the board 7 hours and 42 minutes!

Yesterday's took me about 3 and a half hours.

most of the time I have trouble with experts meaning I can't solve them using all the techniques I know. However using a forcing chain yesterday I was able to solve it in about 45 minutes. I know it was less than an hour because I did it on my lunch hor

TallMike, Thanks for answering my question. I think I understand. On some very difficult puzzles, I have had the experience of guessing on a locked pair and finding that I still can't resolve it without another guess. Then the problem is that I run out of checkpoints after finding that my guesses were wrong and I end up having to start over. Its also a problem of figuring out which guess was wrong. Thanks for the technique! I will try it on that brutal expert from the other day.
