I agree that an x-wing itself does not solve a puzzle - however it does present two possibilities for placement of the numbers composing the x-wing. If I am at a dead-end and see an x-wing, I will look at one of the possibilities and see is the consequences of choosing that would cause an inconsistency. It it does, then I know the other choice is correct. Sometimes this helps and sometimes it does not, In the puzzle 2 days ago, for me, it did.
