Hmm, once I started with the subscripts it fell into place pretty quickly... just keep looking, there are a lot of hidden pairs/triplets and such

nothing that I would call difficult in any regard. The difficulty is that you only have about 2-3 numbers up there initially

It can be done! I normally would have done the same thing that I did with the green and red markers on paper ... and this one would have taken me about two or three hours. Again, my thanks! (Of course, it would have also been possible to dump the clues into a little computer program and have it solve it for me ... a computer's brute force attack on one of these is pretty fast. I did this once with an IronSudoku to test my program and haven't touched it since).

well... unless you want to be able to go listless on babble, there isn't much USEFUL about going pro - you just get the picture and those stats that everyone has now but you don't NEED the stats if you use the list. whereas the checkpoint might be important to you.

but on sudoku you get to do archived puzzles...

Can someone explain it that solved it? I used the top-right two boxes and narroed down the two numbers, even though they were in other boxes, and I am not sure why it worked.

Well, being able to narrow down what the top right two were, Iw as able to eliminate them from the rest of the row, but I am not sure why I was able to narrow them down.

Because those two lived in other areas in that row, as well.

no x-wings in this one - not even sure the quads were necessary.

There can be an opportunity to use the x-wing technique even if it's not necessary, but I don't recall using anything but the locked candidates and pairs rules on this one

Yeah - what I want to know is how I was able to determine that the upper right was a locked pair when there were other numbers in there and the numbers that were in the top right were in other areas - did I Just make a lucky guess or was there really logic behind it? It seemed to make sense at the time, but not sure why

if two numbers appear together in two cells in a row, column, or group, ONLY THOSE TWO numbers can go there, which means those two numbers MUST go there, or they wouldn't get filled. if those two numbers MUST go there, they can't go anywhere else. and the same principle applies for 3 or 4 etc.

So, if I have (there are fake numbers!!) 1,2,3 in one cell and 1,3,4 in another cell, I know that 1 and 3 have to go there because they both appear in the same group?

no.

go there == go in those two cells

it has to be like 1,3 and 1,3. or for 3 numbers, you could have 1, 2, 4, and 1,2 and 1,4, or whatever. but you must have the number of numbers match the number of cells they fill.

See, that's what I figured, so I think I made a lucky guess that they were a locked pair - I know how to eliminate based on what has to go where, but my example is what I had for that top right corner and I picked the locked pair out

actually, in my experience, all that's ever needed is basic logic, and on the experts, an occasional forcing chain.

i'm sure if i knew the advanced techniques i could avoid using forcing chains but they don't come up that often so it's not really worth it.

That one you helped me with the other day is the only one here I haven't been able to solve on my own. I can do the eliminations pretty well most of the time

yes, you had to use a forcing chain (ie guess).

forcing chains are a subset of guessing - they are guessing but making sure you're right before eliminating your marking work. :)

No Problem, DM - thanks for looking. I'll play with Simple Sudoku and this puzzle and see if I can figure out why I saw what I saw

Enter the given numbers, then start the puzzle.. It won't let you do your own possibility marking, as far as I know--which actually makes a puzzle like this harder--but you can exclude possibilities as you work through it.

The filtering options are pretty handy too, and work differently depending on whether you're viewing the possibilities or not.

(I mention these things because it took me a while to figure them out.)
