it's interesting, if you think about it, that all faith assumptions get made fun of except atheism (for it is, as many smarter than i have noted, as much a faith assumption to be sure that there is definitely not a God as it is to be sure that there is a God - agnostics are the ones without faith...and even they don't usually lack it because they have searched and questioned and not found, but because they have not cared to search)

maybe that is WHY atheists don't realize that they have a faith - because they don't get made fun of - so they figure, their belief must be rational, and that's why it isn't mocked

but, if p then q does not lead to if not q then not p.

i would hypothesize that it is rather that the faith assumption of a certain type of God, of any type at all, really, lends itself to mocking... and it doesn't really do the people being mocked any harm - because if we happen to be right, then we're all set, and if we are wrong, all that happens is we die like the rest.

whereas, believing in the absence of something provides no foothold, if you will, for mockery, AND if atheists are wrong, then, it's just sad that they are missing out on knowing God. which would make it sad to make fun of them.

well, you see, there's really no reason at all to get hackles in a wad. in fact, my pity is probably more irritating to an atheist than any mocking could ever be to me.

not that i have pity in order to irritate, of course.

and incidentally, my comments are not at all meant to be construed as supporting the idea that you should believe "just in case" - was that pascal or descartes...? because, well, that just doesn't work. you can't MAKE yourself believe something you don't really believe.

as for hackles, completely understand and agree. but not having the delicate touch you possess just leaves me gritting my teeth -- not at apt, but at my lack of knowing what to say. don't want to stoke the fire, if you know what mean.

well, i find that it helps me to remember that no matter what, we are all human beings and therefore should try to treat each other humanely and with respect.

:) i have found snobbery comes back around to bite me. as soon as i get high and mighty about anything, God finds a way to clear things up for me pretty well.

it's odd because, actually, i can be very patient with lack of intelligence if i'm tutoring somebody in math.

i guess maybe it is more frustrating to me when there's nothing i can do to help.

or when, say, the unintelligent person is the leader of the free world.

yeah, the late 70s and most of the 90s were pretty bad :)

but then, perhaps bush, like jessica simpson, is not as dumb as he seems, but plays it up for effect, and takes advantage of the unintelligence of the masses.

thankfully, whatever happens this election, our new president will be reasonably intelligent, and able to speak in coherent sentences.

i'm being so irrational. because really, other weaknesses could be far more dangerous to the country, and i have really no idea which personal weaknesses ARE the most dangerous, and yet, because i find one particular one irritating, i'm harder on it and more anxious to have a president without it.

I would strongly argue that atheism is NOT a faith in and of itself. But this is hardly the right forum for so deep a philosophical discussion. To me, it's simply a matter of evidence and what makes sense. My world view just plain works without the divine and I need no faith in that concept. I just have no need for it. There's nothing active in that belief any more than I need an active belief in gravity.

but, dear andy, evidence and proof are two different things. neither of us has the latter, and we clearly see the evidence different ways, and what makes sense to us differs. my world view just plain works with the divine, and experientially, it doesn't FEEL like faith any more than yours does to you. for me, the fact that God exists is something i have just "known" ever since i can remember.

and why isn't it the right forum? anytime's a good time for a good discussion, in my opinion, if it is a polite and respectful one.

perhaps, though, you are then actually an agnostic, rather than an atheist?

the difference being that an atheist would assert firmly that there is no God, while an agnostic might say, i have seen no evidence of one.
