My scoring algorithm is deficient for puzzles like this. It doesn't properly estimate the difficulty of making the big break through. Once the break through is made everything just falls into place.

I use alternating inference chains, y-wings, xy chains, simple coloring, etc., etc. are all special cases of the alternating inference chain.

I think I will try to give a good explanation of alternating inference chains at my web site. I have explanation of only the most basic techniques. I have found that those combined with AIC is all I need.

One thing I look for is if there are only 3 places in a row or column at a particular digit can go. I try assuming it can't go in 1 of the cells then see if I can infer it must go in 1 of the other 2 cells, that eliminates the 3rd possibility.
