It's pick-a-president day here!
2:15 am
Phil
We're following the election with interest in Australia.
2:17 am
Phil
Local polls on who Aussies would elect are about 85;15 in favour of Obama. Wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the World was similar.
2:17 am
eyeman
Hi Phil. Yes, it's time for Mr. Bush to pack up and leave. He has more than two months to do so.
2:18 am
Phil
Even that's bizarre, think we give them a couple of days!
2:18 am

My guess is 65-35 Obama...
2:19 am

We're lucky, our election campaigns are about 5 weeks, you poor souls have to put up with years!

WIsh it were one day here, but we have to wait till Jan. 20.
2:20 am

When is your next election?
2:21 am
Phil
Probably 2 - 3 yrs, don't have fixed terms, max 4 years but they tend to call it earlier if they think the've got a better chance.

Isn't the government seat in Canberra?

Hope the result is clear cut, the legal arguments and the daft hanging chad debate last time had us all rather bemused.

Indeed! I am optimistic this time around.

Well, it is almost 3:30 am Tuesday here - I need to return to bed for another 4 hours. Bye all.

Canberra, the nations capital. Melbourne and Sydney are the main cities but they couldn't agree so we got a rather sterile pllace between the two occupied in the main by pollies, civil servants and journos, not much else worth going there for.

Let's see, Obama would redistribute the solved puzzles from those ranked "Elite" to those unfortunate souls with lesser rankings. Since I earned my "Elite" ranking it should be mine to keep or share as I choose, not Obama's. Go McCain! Sorry, I just don't see a place for Robin (Robbing) Hood in today's politics. Give me a leader that has actually done something before besides talk. NOBAMA

You must be paying attention to those talk radio people. The drive by media hasn't told us anything about Obama. They've told us more about Joe the plumber than Obama!

of course, for me, they're both politicians - which means they're speaking out of both sides of their mouths, what they promise and what they'll do will probably only have the slimmest of similarities, and reality is going to put brakes and limits on what gets done, anyway

Father and son chat: "Dad, may I have 10 dollars? There are some people down town begging for money and I'd like to give them some." Okay, son, if you rake the yard I'll pay you 10 dollars and you can give that to the beggars." After a long pause, the son said "Why don't the beggars rake the yard and earn the 10 dollars?" The father then said "Welcome to the Republican Party, son." NOBAMA

Spreadeagle--as a regular, I am pleased with where I am and some day I may achieve Pro status, then again it is not important if I do. I have no desire to be an elite. Whereever I am I prefer to be there based on my own efforts, not your forced giving.
6:47 am
spreadeagle
redbirds, that is a wonderful attitude. I can assure you that this is the only place I am considered "elite". I have always worked hard for what little I have and I just don't like the idea of someone taking it from me to give to someone else who hasn't worked for it. Don't get me wrong, I give plenty to many different charities. My father taught me a great lesson: "Help those can't, ignore those who won't".

PS I wonder, who really rules the US
9:03 am
yul
BTW on "unfair" distribution of wealth by Obama... I don't think there's much danger of that happening
9:38 am
RandLS
the real worry about distribution of wealth under obama is that the democrats have a very real potential to control the House, Senate, AND Presidency, creating a mostly unstoppable super majority that can more easily pass legislation
9:38 am
RandLS
and a government that legislates frequently can't be good
9:40 am
RandLS
That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves. - Thomas Jefferson
9:44 am
yul
But do you really want another clown like Bush to be your President?
9:44 am
RandLS
definitely not, but none of the existing candidates are Bush, or are "just like Bush", so that's a non-issue
9:45 am
RandLS
and the reality is that Bush hasn't done much of anything that the Democratic Congress didn't put before him
9:45 am
RandLS
so it isn't just Bush that's the problem...it's the Congress as well
9:54 am
yul
I don't know about the congress.. It is difficult from abrade. But Obama looks like CIA and McCane like another Bush. I know it's too simplistic but, still, Obama represents some kind of change. At least if Obama gets the presidency, it will look like Americans are not racially biased. Please don't think I am trying to offend anybody
10:04 am
RandLS
Ugh. I've really grown to dislike the notion that a vote against Obama is a vote for racism and vice versa. It definitely helps his campaign, though.
10:06 am
RandLS
Thankfully there are more than two parties we can vote for. Hopefully the other parties get enough votes to help them in the future as a result of this mess!

One thought before you move on and I shut up__ did you know Obama will try to bankrupt the coal companys and he does not care how high our electic bill goes?
10:21 am

Yeah. It also doesn't hurt that he's a great speaker. He can talk for hours, say nothing, and still get rounds of applause. ;)

Did you know that when the Great Depression occured in 1929 the top 0.1% of Americans had a combined income equal to the bottom 42%. That same top 0.1% of Americans in 1929 controlled 34% of all savings, while 80% of Americans had no savings at all.
Did you know that NOW, in 2007/2008, the top 1% of earners earn more than the bottom 70% of all earners? (I think that 70% is higher, but I can't find where the stats on that are this morning)
IMO, it is because of this gap that we need to rollback the tax cuts to those earning >$250K and to increase that salary cap. And my family will not save as much under Obama's plan as we would with McCain. Those earning >$2.8M would pay .5M more under Obama's plan (think about how many of the 0.1% of the US population earning $2.8M earn that MUCH more than that amount & .5M is only 20% of that). Under McCain, they would actually save .25M than what they currently pay
10:27 am
ellenz
You think your taxes are not gooing to go up? you are sadlly mistaken unless you do not pay them now!!!! With out the top people to make the jobs there will be none
10:27 am
jcmommy
Obama would roll taxes back to Clinton-year taxes. The rest of the world has a positive view of Obama, we need that back.
10:29 am

The reason the businesses are leaving is because we are the 2nd highest tax counkry in the world!! THAT IS WHY THE BUSINESSES LEAVE
10:30 am
jcmommy
Businesses are leaving because they want more profits than they already earn. THE PEOPLE need to matter - business will follow.

EXCUSE ME----- THEY EARN EVERY PENNY!! BUT THE GOVERNMENT HAS ITS HANDS OUT AND DID YOU KNOW WHAT THE GOVERNMENT MADE ON THE OIL COMPANYS? BILLIONS AND BILLIONS
10:33 am
RandLS
What would be wrong with a flat tax that is equal for all segments of society, without exemptions beyond one for the poverty line? then the middle class and rich would all pay their share equally?
10:33 am
RandLS
why unfairly target anyone, including the rich, just because they have something others do not?
10:34 am
ellenz
i AM FOR A FLAT TAX
10:34 am
jcmommy
I don't have a problem with a flat tax - but Obama's plan is closer to a flat tax than McCains.
10:34 am
RandLS
not hardly
10:34 am
RandLS
neither obama or mccain advocate anything remotely resembling a flat tax
10:34 am
ellenz
the ones that pay NO taxes have not a clue--everyone should have to pay taxes even if it is a dollar
10:35 am
RandLS
the only candidate im aware of that does advocate such a thing is Bob Barr
10:35 am
ellenz
i know that
10:36 am
jcmommy
yes. when our top earners pay taxes only on earnings up to $250K, then they pay a smaller percentage than all the other brackets.
10:37 am
RandLS
our top earners pay taxes well beyond $250k...that's never been the problem. the problem is all the loopholes in the tax code that makes it easy to exclude money from taxation
10:37 am
Inge
done. I never dreamt taht sudoku players could chat this much. I love it
10:37 am
RandLS
get rid of the silly system of tax first, exempt later and create a system whereby everyone is taxed the same percentage, and that problem goes away nicely
10:38 am
ellenz
so why do we elect jusch idiots?

My solution to income taxes is to repeal the 16th amendment. Replace it with an amendment that recognizes that a tax on income is a direct tax and thus subject to apportionment among the states as provided in Art. I Section 2 of the Constitution.

Perhaps we should change tax day to coincide with election day. You fill out your taxes on one side of a form and vote on the other side :)
11:47 am

How about 1 vote for each 1000 dollars you actually pay in taxes? Let those that pay the most have control over how it is spent? :-)
