There something special about holding and reading a book. You also feel that if it was a reference book it was most likely to be the truth as was known at the time. Sadly today with all the information at our finger tips, you know that there is a very high chance that what you are reading is not the truth. That to me is the saddest part of social media today.

@phil I actually worked for a science publisher in the 80s and headed the IT department that made the software to produce reference books and journals from a database. It was pioneering. There were no standards yet. We had to invent out own mark-up language. But the most exiting moment was when the first finished books arrived. The beautiful print, the lovely smell of the cover. One custom was to put a bottle of jenever Dutch gin on the table and bring out a toast. That was in Amsterdam of course.
