KnightTime - the technique I used to solve the December 3 expert was only slightly different from what you described. Instead of three pairs of numbers, the entire contents of the row I started with were two pairs of numbers plus one threesome and one foursome. There was even another row I could have used which also contained two pairs of numbers, one threesome and one foursome.
